Cafe areas of Joburg. Amazing how many cute areas there are, some similar to a Soho or Greenwich Village type. It is so nice discovering sides of Joburg that I never knew existed all these years. One really must have a local friend in order to learn the best spots of an unknown city. How lucky I am to have a few!

DAY 28 – DEWILDT CHEETAH CENTER I have also adopted a King Cheetah here at DeWildt so I am anxious to meet him. He is a 2 year old named Sebenyabi and will be a permanent resident at DeWildt to use for future breeding purposes verses being sent to a zoo somewhere or some Saudi Prince’s villa. The difference between a King and the cheetah that we are all familiar with, is a recessive gene which produces a difference in appearance. In place of spots it has bold, unbroken stripes running the length of the spine; like ink-blots also raised above the base fur, and spread over legs, flanks and chest: a tail both striped and ringed; and a bit longer fur. This differs greatly from the Cheetah with its simple solid dark spots. Once regarded as a separate species, it is now known that it is a true cheetah but has a variation of pelt pattern. It is now believed that there are less than 10 in the wild, however breeding programs in captivity, such as the one at DeWildt, have served to propagate this magnificent animal. One of the theories that these striped cheetahs do not survive as successfully as their counterparts, is because of their markings which do not allow them to blend into the landscape and are easily found by predators such as lion or hyaena.
After a tour of the property and feeding the beasties, I get to meet my ‘boy’ and spend some time with him which is a feeling that is impossible to describe in words!
DAY 29 – ELEPHANT SANCTUARY
After a meeting with the director of DeWildt to go over samples that I have made, I take the short ride to the Elephant Sanctuary to live with the mammoths for a day have now propagated very successfully as the terrain around the ellie pens are similar. These cute creatures (yes, it is Timon to you Lion King buffs) are just so photogenic 2 lbs. (.9 kg) with a tail that serves as a balancing tool while sitting upright like a tripod. Meerkats are "snack size" for a number of predators including the various eagles and jackals, so one always stands guard while the others forage or nap. They also have their own ‘911’ with different alarm calls for different predators. Some of their favourite foods are scorpions (meerkats are immune to their venom), beetles, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, worms, crickets (FAST food), small mammals, small reptiles, birds, eggs, tubers and roots. Called the "Solar Panel Of The Animal World," meerkats use their dark-skinned, sparsely furred bellies to warm up. But I’m here to learn about elephants! So enough of the little cuties, it’s time to move on to the big guys!
The elephants here have been rescued from various situations, including a parent being killed and the baby being raised, plus others. While I am here there has been a huge fire in Pilanesberg Park and many elephants were badly burned and orphaned and the Sanctuary is discussing taking in some of the poor ellies whose future is questionable. After lunch, I join up with the ellies in the afternoon getting to know each of them 30 – ELEPHANT SANCTUARY CONT’D
After my briefing, I get a chance to shake trunks with each of the ellies. I’m the only one here, so I have all the babes to myself. I promptly get a huge smooch from one of them, prompting the handler to help take the giant suction cup off of my face, leaving an über mud hickey behind! I get a chance to snuggle up to them, feed them all, take them for a walk bitters) crannies of the hill. Funny that these small hyrax are here, as they are the closest relative to the elephant, along with the dugongs, or manatees. After we get back down the hill, we put the ellies to ‘bed’ after cleaning their stalls, making a bed of hay sound inside.
After we sit down to discuss the next day’s activities, my host notices 2 wettish holes in my pant leg near the ankle. We pull up the pant leg to find 2 small vampire-like holes in my leg with a drop or 2 of blood trickling down! I haven’t really felt it, due to the number of branches I thought nothing of it. Well, my host turned 2 shades of pale (which is not easy for a native African) me still alive and kicking, they decide I haven’t been bit by anything poisonous and they FINALLY feed me dinner! At that point, I started breathing again…. I get back to my room to pack up as I’m leaving tomorrow back to Dubai emitting flatulence. Next morning at daybreak, it’s my duty to open the stalls, get them all out, brush them down, fill their feed before I can have breakfast. I don’t mind though, I’m ALIVE after the snake friends.
