These rare specimens came from a Mojave DesertCalifornia gold mineoperating in the early 1900s. They were part of avery old collection. A fire assay was recently done on similarmaterial. Results showed that this ore contains from 1 to 1 oz. gold per ton and a small amount of silver. It should be noted thatthese samples contain some Pyrite as well. Larger core measures about 2inches longby 1 1/2 inches wide. Smaller one measures about 1 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. It looks even better in person. The total weight is 1.15 oz.so the nugget itself is around an ounce. It is almost too big towear! Finger size is 7 but I'm sure it could be re-sized by ajeweler. I am told it is a California nugget. If you enlarge(click on) the photo you can see the reddish-brown matrix in thecrevices - this is typical of nuggets from the Mother Lode region ofCalifornia. This nuggets tests at 21K - 22K and the band is 14K. Theband appears to be hand-formed and was not cast like modern rings. Thedesign on the side was hand-tooled as well. The jeweler could not giveme an exact age but said it was quite old. Natural nuggets this sizeare of course rare so even if you do not intend to wear it, it is aspectacular collector specimen. Possibly worn by a wealthy mineowner???
