Description:

It is often said that out of great pain comes great art. Putting that idea to the test, the board of the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation, a non-profit writers’ organization, decided to hold a poetry contest. The subject: COVID-19. SS: We had an incredible response. This is Sean Sexton. He is the Poet Laureate for Indian River County and grandson of early area Treasure Coast pioneer Waldo Sexton. SS: We had people from Kenya, and we had people from the British Isles send poems. We’re now four months into the pandemic here on the Treasure Coast. This week, the number of cases and hospitalizations we’re seeing is mind-blowing, and the complete picture of our economic fallout is yet to be seen. BM: You know, we’re still seeing customers coming in, but a lot less. This is Bill Moore. BM: Hello! He’s the owner of Kilwin’s Chocolates and Ice Cream in downtown Stuart and he’s president of the downtown Stuart Business Association. Saturday is the 4th of July. And while we won’t be celebrating with big fireworks and crowds this year, there’s plenty to reflect upon. We called up Fellsmere resident and World War II veteran Korky Korker for some patriotic inspiration. CK: My name is Clarence Korker – of course everybody calls me Korky. So that’s a nickname that’s stuck with me for years. I’m 95 years old now. Korker served with the US Navy Armed Guard throughout World War II. CK: I enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and they took me in ’43. This week on Treasure Coast Happenings you can Join Mike Fitzgerald with special guest Sheila Thomas as they discuss virtual Town Hall meetings for St. Lucie County, this will offer you the opportunity talk with candidates, submit questions all while safely distancing yourself during this Covid 19 pandemic.   To sign up to attent these forums contact Sheila at Voteakaeeo@gmail.com This week on Treasure Happenings Mike will be speaking with Nancy McCarthy of the United Way of Martin County about the new school year, how education may look different in the wake of Covid-19 along with the need for school supplies and the financial burdens that many families are going through regarding expenses. Updated at 10:37 p.m. ET Federal agents operating in Kansas City, Mo., as part of a new push against violent crime will be identifiable and won't be roving the streets to make arrests, the local U.S. attorney said, responding to questions sparked by the controversial use of federal agents in U.S. cities. "These agents won't be patrolling the streets," U.S. Attorney Timothy Garrison said in a statement to NPR. "When they are making arrests or executing warrants, these federal agents will be clearly identified by their agency's visible badges or insignia." Federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Marshals Service and elsewhere have been in the streets of Portland, Ore., for at least a few weeks, where they've been clashing with protesters demonstrating over racial injustice and police brutality. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and local officials have downplayed any coordination between those federal forces and the Portland Police Bureau. After a sudden surge in reported COVID- 19 cases beginning at the end of June, Houston's daily case count and hospital admission rates seem to be leveling off. Health officials say they're not ready to determine if the data are statistically significant yet, but it's a positive trend. Last Friday, experts were ringing alarm bells. Millions of Americans are facing the threat of eviction as a federal moratorium that has protected renters during the pandemic is set to expire Friday. That eviction moratorium, coupled with unemployment assistance established in the CARES Act, has helped some renters stay in their homes. It is often said that out of great pain comes great art. A recently ousted counterterrorism chief says the country is risking the gains made against terrorist threats by cutting back resources with little or no public debate. In an interview with NPR, Russ Travers also expressed frustration at the poor state of relations between the intelligence community and the Trump administration. The county government cafeteria in Northampton County, Pa., is a large, airy room with big windows and, for now, lunch tables separated by plexiglass. But a few months from now, on Election Day, this is where the county plans to have a couple of dozen people processing what it expects could be 100,000 mail-in ballots, nearly triple what they handled in the June 2 primary and 15 times what they handled in November 2016. People traveling to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut from 31 other states are now required to self-quarantine for 14 days, after 10 states with significant community spread of the coronavirus — including Virginia, Maryland, Indiana and Alaska — were added to a travel advisory Tuesday. A Detroit police officer is facing charges over accusations that he fired rubber pellets at three photojournalists who were covering anti-racism protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd. Cpl. Daniel Debono, 32, is charged with three counts of felonious assault for allegedly firing the nonlethal ordnance at MLive photographer Nicole Hester and independent photojournalists Seth Herald and Matthew Hatcher in the early morning hours of May 31. Washington is racing to complete a fifth round of legislation to address the ongoing, and still surging, coronavirus pandemic in the next three weeks. The two parties and the White House are at odds over what the major pillars of the legislation should include and how much it should cost. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wants to get a bill to President Trump by Aug. 7 when Congress is scheduled to adjourn for the rest of the summer — a time when lawmakers traditionally hit the campaign trail in an election year. On the next Snap ... "Weight Of The World." Everyone has a secret. Some secrets are heavier than others.
