Description:

The School of Theology prides itself in having a flourishing community for its seminarians, faculty, and staff alike. It is this traditional residential model—of worshiping together, living together, and studying together—that has the proven benefit of building relationships across all possible boundaries and forming leaders for the challenges of today's Church. Beginning with academic year 2020–2021, all students entering residential degree programs will receive aid to cover the full cost of tuition and fees. Generous need-based aid is also available, up to 100% of household living expenses. Master of Divinity The master of divinity (M.Div.) curriculum is designed to provide students with the spiritual formation, knowledge, and skills required to become committed, effective ordained clergy. To this end, the curriculum includes study of Scripture, the Christian tradition, ministerial skills, and modern cultural contexts, with a view to the reasoned practice of the ministry of Word and Sacrament in both its historical context and its contemporary setting. Explore M.Div. Master of Arts The master of arts program is designed as a general academic degree for people who wish to begin advanced study of theological disciplines in a church-related setting. It involves a two-year course of study, following either a general program or pursuing a concentration in a particular discipline. Explore M.A. Doctor of Ministry The doctor of ministry program is designed to enable participants to attain excellence in the practice of ministry. The program provides persons actively engaged in professional ministry the opportunity to develop further the attitudes, skills, and knowledge essential to their ministry. The D.Min. program stresses the relationship between the practice of ministry and Biblical, historical and theological knowledge. Explore D.Min. Master of Sacred Theology The master of sacred theology (S.T.M.) degree provides the opportunity to gain further mastery in a chosen area of theological study. Students will attain and apply the skills needed for scholarly research in a theological discipline at an advanced level. The S.T.M. program is intended for those who may wish to prepare for graduate study at the doctoral level or for various forms of teaching, to enhance their scholarly understanding of ministerial practice, or to engage in disciplined reflection in an area of ministry. Explore S.T.M. Master of Sacred Theology in Anglican Studies The master of sacred theology in Anglican studies program provides the opportunity to acquire fuller mastery in that field and is suitable for those previously ordained in another denomination who plan to be ordained in the Episcopal Church. Applicants for admission should have a M.Div. degree prior to enrollment. Explore S.T.M./A.S. Diploma of Anglican Studies The diploma of Anglican studies is a special program that examines Anglican theology, history, spirituality, liturgy, preaching, and polity. This program is designed primarily for those who already have a divinity degree and have transferred from the ministry of other communions to ministry in The Episcopal Church. Students are introduced to the Anglican ethos through study of the common heritage and present identity of churches comprising the Anglican Communion, and through study of the development of Anglicanism. Explore D.A.S. Certificate of Theological Studies The certificate of theological studies is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate theological education without earning a degree. The certificate of theological studies program is shaped in consultation with the student’s advisor to meet the needs of the individual. It requires full-time study in residence over one or two semesters. Explore C.T.S. The Beecken Center is a lively center of learning and ministry that offers experiences and resources for adult and youth lay theological education, clergy continuing education, hospitality and evangelism ministries, congregational development, and spiritual formation. Through our core offerings Education for Ministry (EfM), Invite Welcome Connect, and SUMMA Theological Debate Society, and our newer initiatives Deep Green Faith, FaithMatters, and Engaging Ministry, we offer experiences that grow faith and transform lives. We also host several retreats and workshops throughout the year in Sewanee, a wooded paradise on the Cumberland Plateau in middle Tennessee. A video snapshot of the work of the Beecken Center of the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in theological education based upon small-group study and practice. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 100,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together. Invite Welcome Connect is a ministry of transformation that equips and empowers individuals and congregations to cultivate intentional practices of evangelism, hospitality, and belonging. Rooted in the Gospel directive to “Go and make disciples of all nations” this ministry provides a practical theological framework and comprehensive process for engaging communities of faith to move from a maintenance culture to a gospel driven mission culture. Designed to accommodate congregations of all sizes, Invite Welcome Connect crosses all social and economic boundaries and explores the ways creativity and relational ministry go hand in hand in effecting cultural change. Invite Welcome Connect relies on the collaborative creativity of clergy and laity who choose to actively and intentionally embody the principles of hospitality, making this method adaptable to any parish, age group, or location.Invite Welcome Connect has circulated throughout The Episcopal Church and has been presented in 60+ dioceses, three seminaries, three universities, the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, and the Anglican Church in Canada. The award-winning book, Invite Welcome Connect: Stories Tools to Transform Your Church, was published by Forward Movement in 2018. The transformational ministry of Invite Welcome Connect is introduced in this short video in scenes from the 4th national Invite Welcome Summit, held June 12-14, 2019, at the University of the South, Sewanee, and in interviews with clergy lay leaders at St. James Cathedral, Chicago, Illinois. SUMMA Theological Debate Society is an eight-day summer camp for high school students on the campus of the University of the South. At SUMMA Camp, rising 9-12 graders have a unique, rich experience which includes development of tools for critical thinking and analysis; engagement with the Christian theological tradition and its relevance with important topics; and education in public speaking and debate. SUMMA takes place in a collegiate atmosphere with challenging lectures and stimulating seminar discussions, but camp is not all work. Campers play sports, go hiking, play music, participate in arts and crafts, and more! At its core, SUMMA Student Theological Debate Society is a debate camp for high school students, but it is so much more than that. It is a camp of study, of laughter, of faith, and of fun!
