Health care workers are working in a different world today than just two months ago. It’s now a world where patients can no longer see the face of the doctor caring for them. A world where one of the most important duties of a nurse is to hold the hand of a dying patient. A world where providing hope, in the face of rising fear, is a crucial management goal. This is the world where James Parnell, MD, a 2006 Lipscomb graduate, is now working at the emergency room at Sumner Regional Medical Center, the largest hospital and the most experienced COVID-19 facility in Sumner County, 30 miles northeast of the Nashville metro area.Parnell, an attending physician in the ER, is one of the many Lipscomb alumni now caring for COVID-19 patients across the nation during the current pandemic. Bancroft and Pomeroy are both professors in Lipscomb s College of Entertainment and the Arts. These two draw from their experiences at Disney, Big Idea Productions, and more to teach, guide, and mentor Lipscomb animation students. Both know the impact of an educational setting and a collaborative atmosphere, and seek to develop such for their students. Kirk, a business development engineer at Turner Construction, the number one health care construction manager in Nashville, is not only finding success in a male-dominated field, but she is also paving the way for future women to enter engineering and construction with Girls Build It, a two-day camp to introduce girls to the industry. Ashley Berry is a servant leader who believes in letting your circumstances inspire you to make a difference. She’s already made her mark on lives across the country and here at Lipscomb.Berry, a sophomore from Littleton, Colorado, recently received the Shaka Franklin Foundation’s Profile of Courage Award. Well before that, she was named winner of the International Bullying Prevention Association’s 2018 college scholarship. Seth Walker cannot walk or do any daily tasks of living independently. Even so, Walker wanted to obtain his college degree. His parents knew that he would need help to fulfill his dream. They looked to their church for the perfect person to journey from class to class with Walker, assisting him in everyday and college tasks. Ken Brassell, a member of their home church, saw on Facebook that the family needed help. He agreed and the two became fast friends, spending most of the past five years together. An educator for more than eight years, Patton is one of the founding music business instructors at Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School, home of the first student-run record label, Relentless Entertainment Group. Through this work, Patton’s students have engaged entertainment industry legends and significant stakeholders in the music industry through industry-leading partnerships. His vocal students sang for a national primetime production, as well as were the 2016 recipients of the GRAMMY Signature Schools Enterprise Award. It is a disease that, in its many forms, will impact an estimated 1.7 million Americans this year as new cases are diagnosed. It is the driving force for Qingguo Wang’s life’s work. Chad Estep is a long way from the catcher’s box at Lipscomb’s Dugan Field where he spent countless hours as a member of the Bison baseball team more than two decades ago. Today, Estep is senior vice president and enterprise chief compliance officer at E*TRADE Financial Corporation (E*TRADE). His office is located at E*TRADE’s headquarters in the heart of New York City near the fabled Times Square with a view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. He spends his days leading a team of professionals responsible for overseeing E*TRADE’s compliance management program focused on mitigating compliance and regulatory risk for the firm. One of Lipscomb University’s Fulbright fellows, Courtney “Coco” Stewart (’17), has been selected by the National Institutes of Health to participate in the NIH Academy Enrichment Program, a program for recent college graduates to perform world-class research at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, and learn about health disparities.Stewart, a Spanish and Bible graduate from Houston, spent her 2017-18 Fulbright placement teaching English and creating a healthy living curriculum for a school in the small town of Haro, in La Rioja, Spain. Her experiences there galvanized her decision to switch gears and pursue medical school. When LeBron Hill was a teenager, attending college was a distant dream. Survival was all that was on 18-year-old Hill’s mind after his mother kicked him out of their house in Tullahoma, Tennessee. His brother drove him part of the way to a local homeless shelter, but left him on the side of the road after throwing Hill’s bags into a nearby ditch. A high school senior at the time, Hill was forced to dropout of high school. But where Hill’s story seems to come to a dead end, was actually the beginning of another significant story in his life—the pathway to a college education and to making a better life for himself. And now, years later, Hill is has graduated from Lipscomb University with a degree in communication and is on the way to pursuing a career in journalism. Read More When Hannah Minor came to Lipscomb, the opportunity to study abroad in a German-speaking country, Austria, was of great interest to her. She chose to participate in the semester-long Lipscomb in Vienna program, and made a point to visit Germany during her stay, in an effort to be immersed in the language. Now Hannah Minor, an English and German major, has become Lipscomb s seventh Fulbright Scholar to be selected by the international program in the past 12 years. Not only did Hurt, an English teacher at Nashville’s Lead Academy High School for three years, earn his master’s from Lipscomb this past spring, but he did it while filming the Season 9 episodes of MasterChef, which took him away from campus for several weeks to film in Los Angeles. Inspired by her goal to help develop new antibacterials to better treat infections and fight resistance to antibiotics, Elizabeth Gibson, from Tate, Georgia, became the second Lipscomb Pharm.D. graduate to complete pathway program and earn her Ph.D. in pharmacology. At her new position at St. Jude, Gibson works with Dr. Clinton Stewart, using the experience she gained at Lipscomb and Vanderbilt in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to improve the use of chemotherapy drugs in infants and small children, particularly those with tumors of the central nervous system and other solid malignancies. Ask someone about Colonet and Diaz Ordaz and they might tell you they are just cities in Baja California, Mexico. Ask a player from the Lipscomb University Softball team and they will probably say it is a second home, a place where a part of their heart will always be. Lipscomb graduates land great jobs. But for our grads, a job is just the first step in a larger journey. We believe in work that has purpose, makes an impact on people’s lives and moves the world forward.
