If you are going hiking, especially if you’re going to be in the wilderness for a few days, you want to take things with you that are going to last. You need a good pair of hiking boots, all your hiking gear, plenty of water, plenty of food and all the right equipment. This includes a good watch. You will notice that all serious hikers wear a watch - they don’t rely on their mobile phones - as it is vital that they can tell the time, distance and direction at the same time.

You can go one step further. A good hiking watch should not only tell the time, distance and direction, but also the location, altitude and weather. A good watch for hiking should also have a good navigation system. It’s fine if you’re just going for a walk in the park, but if you’re doing a longer trail, it’s best to be prepared.

And a good watch that is robust and can go with you up and down mountains, into canyons and over water, is essential.

Here are a few of the watches that we think are best for hikers.

Casio Pro Trek PRW 3100

Staying with Casio, this is known as the watch that never breaks so it is an ideal watch for hiking or any extreme outdoor adventure. It has the reputation of the ‘toughest watch of all times.’ This watch is water resistant, electric shock resistant, low temperature resistant and can survive all the elements. It can also get bashed around a whole lot (maybe you’re clambering over boulders) and it will still look good, work perfectly well and get you to wherever you need to be. Garmin Fenix 5X
You won’t get lost with a Garmin watch and you won’t lose the time either. The Garmin Fenix series of watches are designed with sport in mind - football, rugby, swimming, hiking and extreme sport. They’re especially good for wilderness trails and mountaineering and features include GPS tracking and navigation, an electronic compass, a thermometer, barometer and barometric altimeter. The Garmin Fenix 5 also has mapping which means you can see the topography of your area. You know what’s coming up and you also know exactly where you are. To have mapping on your watch is extraordinary - it helps you stay out of trouble and also choose the best possible route. These watches are hardy!

Suunto
If you are not familiar with the Suunto brand of watches, they’re specially designed for hiking and extreme activity. They are tough and durable watches, have a large range so you can choose the one that works best for your activity of choice, they have versatile navigation, are excellent for planning and tracking. Suunto watches also have a long battery life. They’re outdoor watches so you may not want to wear them to the movies or for a dinner date, but if you are going hiking, Suunto is an excellent brand. There are lots of styles and for hiking you may want to look at the Suunto Spartan Ultra or the Suunto Traverse.

A lot of the luxury watch brands design watches that are perfect for outdoor activity and hiking. If you’re going out for a day, sure, wear your Rolex, Seiko or Omega. The Seiko Alpinist is a great watch for hiking too by the way, including long hikes. If you’re going out on a yacht or doing a little cruising, your Rolex will look perfect and you can swim to great depths. If you are going on a real adventure where you do need to tell the time perfectly, navigate, not get lost and be able to rely on your watch for a whole lot of options, and have it hardy as anything, then look at the Casio range. The Casio Pathfinder is an ideal watch for a hiker too. And you cannot go wrong with a watch from the Garmin or Suunto range.
