Gazetteer literally means only a geographical index or geographical dictionary.It not only includes a comprehensive description of the physical and natural features of a region but also a broad narrative of the social,political,economic and cultural life of the people living in a district. Compilation and Publication of the revised District Gazetteers edition was started in 1949. Accordingly gazetteer's of the 26 districts at the time of formation of state of Maharashtra were published.
