Description:

This server provides information about mineralogy and isprimarily dedicated to providing information about color inminerals and access to data on Mineral AbsorptionSpectrain the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum and Ramanspectra of minerals. Most data on the server were obtained inthe Caltech mineral spectroscopy labs. Other types ofspectroscopic data on minerals are also available. Visible, near-infrared and infrared absorption spectra areavailable for a number of minerals. Examples include commonrock-forming minerals, gem minerals, and other minerals ofparticular interest. Both data coordinates and images of thespectra are available for selected minerals. Information aboutthe origin of color is available for selected minerals. Data areavailable both as images and as ASCII text with X,Y formatfollowing two header lines. Raman, infrared, and reflectance dataare available and Mössbauer data are solicited. More detailsfollow. Extensivereferences to Optical Spectroscopic data now availableHave a look at our updated Listof 755 ReferencesThis is a list of references to papers onmineraloptical spectroscopy. It is an updated version of the list ofreferences which appeared in Chapter 7, Optical Spectroscopyin Reviews in Mineralogy volume 18 published by theMineralogical Society ofAmerica .Citations are available sorted both by mineral name and by firstauthors of papers. Learnwhy minerals have the colors they doBe sure to see the sections illustratingexplaining the origin of colorin minerals. You can learn about metal ions in crystals, intervalence charge transfer, and radiation-induced colors. Many examples are shown and explained. Click here to see pictures of MineralSpectroscopists who have co-authored 10 or more papers inmineral optical spectroscopy. (Do you have other pictures tocontribute?) Spectroscopy Laboratory Instruments SignupNotice: The labs are opening up, but with just one person per lab at the current timeDue to the backlog of demand, we ask Raman users to sign up for no more than24 hours per week. The instrument signup program has now added all major instruments in the labsThe instrument signup program now includes the wet chemistry lab and the polishing lab - one person per lab.Ifyou sign up for an instrument in 356 Arms (Raman, XRF, microOptical, etc.) be SURE to check all other instruments calendars for theroom so you don't overlap with someone else.Division of Geological andPlanetary SciencesThis work is licensed under a Creative CommonsAttribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.GeorgeR.Rossman grr @gps.caltech.edu Mineralogy at CaltechRequiredfine print:Thismaterial is based uponwork supported, in part, by the NationalScienceFoundationunder Grants No. 1322082, 0947956, 0550216,0337816, 0125767, 9804871, 9405438, 9725897, 9218980, 9104059,8916064, 8915909, 8816006, 8618200, 8313098, 8212549, 7923606,7904801, 7919987, 7723147, and 7602014.
