2D to 3D

Students in 3rd through 6th grades will taking a journey through the history of three-dimensional art, and learn how an idea turns from a drawing into a sculpture! They'll realize their own artistic visions by creating 3D painted sculptures from recycled cardboard. Taught by Samantha Palmeri.

PAPER, WOOD, WOOL, CLAY

Students in 2nd through 4th grade will use these materials to follow their inspirations, working on independent projects and reflecting as a group. As this class is for older students, the focus will be more on how we make decisions as artists, and how our materials inform those decisions.

TACTILE EXPLORERS

This arts-based class, for children 18 months to 3 years and a caregiver, empowers little ones to make choices, explore ideas, and discover materials that might just result in squeals of delight!

IMAGINATION PLAYHOUSE

For students in Pre-K through 1st grade, this class is a playful introduction to storytelling through performance. Students will explore stories while laying a foundation of skills in acting, singing, and movement, sprinkled with some instrumental exploration and a whole lot of fun.

THEATER CRAFTERS

In this theater class, students in 5th-7th grades will play improv and theater games and begin building long-form improv skills. Students will learn about the craft of acting and the creation of theater by reading and performing scenes from our favorite comedies and dramas, learning monologues, developing original characters, and creating their own work.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S PERFORMANCE COMPANY

Students in 8th through 12th grade have the opportunity to participate in this exciting new, year-long program. The goal is to give the students a place to dig deeper into acting and performing, to create original work that allows them to express their authentic selves, and to have opportunities to perform more regularly in a supportive environment, all while building community.

TODDLER & PRESCHOOL CREATIVE DANCE

Little ones 18 months to 4 years and their caregivers will dance together, making creative choices while building body awareness, learning positive group dynamics, and developing gross motor skills. We will run like cheetahs, jump like popcorn, and wiggle like spaghetti. Each class will consist of a warm up, a story-inspired movement adventure, and an ever-changing obstacle course, concluding with the all time favorite: freeze dance!

MODERN CREATIVE DANCE

Dance, explore, create! In this class, students in 2nd through 4th grade will find inspiration in new and surprising ways, while learning values of self-expression, healthy body awareness, musicality, and connection with oneself and others. The fall semester will end with a small share for families and the Winter/Spring semester will culminate with a performance by the students at Compass Arts' Spring Showcase, May 5-7.

MODERN DANCE MAKERS

Body, space, and time are the three basic components of any dance composition. In this class, students in 5th through 7th grades will experience how these themes support each other, then learn to weave them together. The class will consist of a thorough warm up, discovery, and creation. Technique fundamentals will be woven throughout.

YOGA BABIES!

Compass Arts is always looking to provide inspiring experiences! For parents of babies under twelve months (and expectant parents), Heather Davies' Yoga Babies class will utilize mindful stretching, breath, strength building, and restorative postures. All movements are designed to support pelvic floor health and potential diastatis recti in postpartum bodies, but all bodies will benefit!

POLYPHONIA AND POLYPHONIC JAMBOREE

Compass Arts is well-known for its eminently cool approach to music-making for youth. Unexpected music selections, kids playing xylophones, percussion and recorders (or anything else), tinikling, flashlights and improv are just some of the surprising elements found in a Compass Arts music ensemble. This Fall Polyphonia and Polyphonic Jamboree will take the Compass Arts music making experience to a new level.

DRAWING AND PAINTING WITH SAMANTHA PALMERI

We're glad to be bringing back Samantha Palmeri to teach drawing and painting this fall. Samantha is a visual fine artist with a demonstrated history of working in the arts as an artist, teacher, curator, and arts administrator. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, she has over twenty years experience teaching visual arts to children and adults both inside and outside the classroom.

Compass Arts Creativity Project classes, ensembles, events and camps are created for the Beacon and surrounding communities for the purpose of building those communities. Our vision is a big one. As a creativity project, we believe that communities are stronger when problem solving skills are encouraged at every age level and that the best way to build problem solving skills is through creativity. Through creative arts exploration students are given opportunities to think, and to think for themselves--to feel empowered by coming up with a story plot twist or an ending to a play or to discover the joy of being able to improvise over a musical accompaniment. We believe that our best work involves encouraging contribution, whether it is a colorful swipe of a brush, a melody or an idea. The essence of what we hope to do at Compass Arts is this, that those sometimes large and sometimes small contributions allow students to evolve into something the world desperately needs--individuals with vision.
