TWO LEADING Trade Associations have called for more rigorous checks on the fire safety of pre-insulated pipework being installed in buildings. The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) and the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA) have issued a joint statement that raises questions about the suitability of pipework that’s normally used for underground and buried applications, such as primary heating networks, being deployed inside buildings. THE INTERNATIONAL Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), itself a World Health Organisation body, has declared that an individual’s occupational exposure to harmful materials/substances as a result of serving as a practising firefighter is classified as “carcinogenic” (ie a potential cause of cancer). FIRE CREWS from the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales were called to a huge fire in early May at a laundry in Ross-on-Wye, the Business Sprinkler Alliance has confirmed. The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, destroyed the business and is one of several major laundry fires to break out in unsprinklered facilities in recent years.
