The main goal of the Gizmo is to show students how to represent data in many different ways. The Gizmo contains seven different options for displaying voting results—table, tally chart, pictograph, bar graph (horizontal or vertical), circle graph, and dot plot. In addition, students can pick different types of voting preferences—one favorite, two favorites, three favorites, and random—and see how the results change.If you’d like, you could do a quick experiment in voter participation with this Gizmo. Is it possible for one mascot to win if all 100 students vote, but a different mascot wins if, say, only 50 students vote? To try this, set the number of students to 100 and click “Vote.” Check the winner, and then slowly drag the “Students” slider back to the left. Does the winner ever change?
