Where are the Butterflies? By Joyce CoomerUsually, this time of year, there are several butterflies flitting across the yard at any time of the day. Gizmo of the Golden Eyes has taken it upon herself to rid the yard of such nuisances but that doesn't account for the lack of butterflies elsewhere. Our pasture should be a butterfly smorgasbord. Currently there is butterfly weed galore scattered across the pasture -- some in full bloom, some just starting to bloom. Add in bee balm, black-eyed Susans, sand briars, white, red and yellow clovers, a few lingering daisies, a bright yellow flower in the dandelion family, and Queen Anne's lace just starting to bloom, as well as flowers I haven't bothered to identify, and there should be butterflies everywhere I look.Yesterday afternoon, besides the dozens of annoying flies, the only flying things I saw around any flowers were three bees -- not honeybees either. (I've not seen a honeybee on our place for at least ten years. With the amount of white clover in the front yard alone there should be dozens.) I haven't identified these bees. Perhaps a respite from the advertisements on television and the unsolicited phone calls. However, we historians like to look back at our ancestors and learn, when possible, what their political leaning was a century or more ago. Old newspapers are a wealth of information, often giving the mundane facts of life. The Whig Party was on the rise in the early 1840s. Adair County had a strong party following as the following item from Kentucky Tribune, Danville, KY, of 3 November 1843, will bear out."Whig Meeting in Adair County--At a meeting of the Whigs of Adair County, held at the Courthouse on Monday, the 23rd of October, 1843, it being a day on which a called County Court was held, Col. William McNeely was called to the chair, and Isaac H. Caldwell appointed Secretary."After Parker C. Hardin, Esq. Had briefly explained the object of the meeting, the following resolutions were adopted: Article continues... click here to read the whole article, or to share, print, or bookmark it. 2020-06-29 06:33:01 | Comments | See topic Mike Watson - History Betty Young, 77, Columbia, KY (1942-2020) Betty Young of Columbia passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 8:11 P.M. at her home. Innovative treatment program reveals savings for members Diabetes Value Program provides maintenance prescriptions and supplies for free or at reduced costsBy Russell GoodwinFrankfort, KY - Lowering the price of diabetes treatment is helping control overall medical costs, according to a four-year review of Kentucky Employees' Health Plan (KEHP) data. The latest data reveals that as members continue adherence to their diabetes treatment, the average medical trend for members with diabetes and members without diabetes are the same. In addition, ER visits and inpatient admissions were lower for diabetes patients than patients without diabetes during this same four-year period.KEHP provides health insurance to almost 300,000 public employees, retirees and their families - roughly 6.6% of the state's overall population. Diabetes is one of the mostly costly medical conditions for the state's largest self-insured health plan, costing more than $3 million dollars a year. No hurting him or her but has to move on. Cats are about to move. They are scared of it. Well got one. Then last night another smarter one showed up. Not falling for that. Also showing up was an opossum and ground hog. This isn't a zoo folks. Critters here are of the black Angus variety and 4 elderly kitties. Relocation is a must so I will persevere until I rid the Pampered Angus Ranch of these destructive critters. Will send separate pictures. --Spread Boss Miss Victoria Comments re: Carol Perkins: Many have helped with raccoon invasion Click here to share, print, or bookmark this article. 2020-06-29 06:15:03 | Comments | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback Flash flood watch in effect, mostly cloudy, high 87F It's currently 69F at the Adair County Mesonet station. September 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener The column below *probably* first appeared in one of the September, 1977 issues of the Daily Statesman. Topics included the tiny community of Keltner, KY, a visit from a genealogist, the law career of Cousin Billy Willis, and one-year anniversaries for Convenient Food Mart and Burger Queen. --PenBy Ed WaggenerThere is nary a Keltner in Keltner anymore, although some quite famous ones, including former Columbia Mayor John Hollis Keltner, are from there.Keltner is the main metropolis along Highway 768, after Milltown, so far on the edge of Adair County that it is almost in Metcalfe--or Green.According to the sign by Elroy Coffey's house on the eastern approach of Keltner, the population is nine."But that isn't so," Clarice Coffey, who runs the Kellner general store, Ural Coffey General Merchandise, with her husband, says."There's Elroy (Coffey) and his wife Vinnle, and their son Phillip, that's three," she says. "Then there is Ural and me. That's five. And Amos Willis and his wife Tina. That's seven. And then there's the Bennetts-Bobby and Geraldine, and their children, Mike and Gail. That's 11," Mrs. Coffey calculates. There is just the one store in Keltner. Coffey's serves the western tip of Adair County, from over around Morris Chapel, the Metcalfe County area around Bridgeport, and a little of Green County up around Mell. The store carries everything, from food and drinks to clothes, shoes, and hardware. It's a good thing, too, because it is 16 miles into Columbia, and that 16 miles is among the crookedest road in Adair County, whether one travels along Weed Ridge or comes down through Milltown. Except for the week when we had the outbreak in the Nursing Home, in terms of new cases and active cases, last week was our worst week since the outbreak began. Also, in terms of new cases, this was our state's worst week since the outbreak began. If the new cases rate continues to grow as it has over the last two weeks, we are not far from our capacity being overwhelmed - meaning, we will not have enough staff available to investigate every close contact. Additionally, we are already starting to see hospital bed capacity become a concern at some locations around our nation. It is foolhardy to think that cannot happen in Kentucky. If this were to happen - once the hospital capacity is overwhelmed or once too many medical staff are off sick with the disease - it will not matter what your health care need is, the hospital will be overwhelmed. Now is our window of opportunity to prevent this eventuality. Now. Not a month from now, not a week from now. Now. If the public waits too long to shake off its complacency with the public health guidance, the disease will be so embedded within our communities it will be nearly impossible to slow its further spread. Our best chance for slowing the spread is for everyone to wear a mask when out in public, to avoid crowds, to social distance (stay 6-feet from others), to wash their hands with soap and water often and thoroughly, to stay home if they have a fever or are coughing, to increase sanitation, and to avoid touching their faces.
