Read More PHOTOS: Life In Austin During The Coronavirus Pandemic KUT's photographers are documenting the changes to daily life that a pandemic has brought to the Austin area — from a safe distance. Read More“It wasn’t easy,” says aGLIFF president Casandra Alston about the decision to move the venerable film festival online. “[Because] the whole point of having a queer film festival is the community and coming together and being able to share with each other, and fellowship.” From Texas Standard: As schools figure out their plans for the fall semester, one related question is what happens with sports. States like California, Washington and New Mexico have moved fall sports to the spring. But in Texas, where Friday nights in the fall are for football, public schools are going to give athletics a go. From Texas Standard: On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act. The landmark law turns 30 this Sunday. The ADA bars discrimination against people with disabilities in housing, public accommodation and employment. It provides protections that many may assume have always been the law of the land. But before the ADA, many people with disabilities lived in institutional settings, often found it difficult to enter public places and had no recourse when denied a job. Three weeks after Gov. Greg Abbott required Texans to wear masks, epidemiologists and disease modelers say they are cautiously optimistic that the mandate is helping the state turn a corner in its efforts to contain an outbreak that has killed more than 4,500 Texans. As the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly throughout the U.S. and beyond, many are wondering: How on earth will this end? In an interview televised this week, President Trump reiterated his belief that sooner or later the virus will burn itself out. "I will be right eventually," the president told Fox News host Chris Wallace. "It's going to disappear, and I'll be right." The Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly passed a defense appropriations bill that calls for renaming U.S. military bases that honor Confederate officers — a provision that President Trump has threatened to veto. The Senate's 86-14 vote to approve the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is more than enough to override a veto, should the president follow through on his threat. The vote comes days after the House passed a similar version of the $741 billion bill. An unused rail line to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport could become a new hike-and-bike trail and even host a transit line in the future. The Capital Area Regional Planning Organization (CAMPO) and the City of Austin's Urban Trails Program are gathering input on what should happen with the line, known as the Bergstrom Spur. Updated at 6:56 p.m. ET The Jacksonville, Fla., component of the Republican National Convention has been canceled, President Trump announced on Thursday, as cases of the coronavirus continue to spike across that state. "I looked at my team and I said the timing for this event is not right. It's just not right with what's been happening," Trump said at the daily coronavirus briefing. This week, when Travis County Commissioners voted to enact a “burn ban” in response to dry conditions, Fire Marshal Tony Callaway said there could be an added bonus to approving the measure. “Normally, if we put a burn ban in place, we do receive the rain,” he chuckled, “so that’s one positive way of looking at this.” From Texas Standard: Earlier this month the State Fair of Texas made headlines by cancelling this fall's fair due to COVID-19. It's big news, to be sure – over 2.5 million people went to the fair last year, and its cancellation is a blow to vendors and employees. But it's just the latest letdown for an industry that's been hit hard by the coronavirus. Hundreds of John L. Hanson's interviews have been restored and digitized thanks to a grant from Recordings at Risk.TAGS:KUT
