An APR News Feature The University of Alabama system is taking the latest steps this week toward a planned return of students in the fall. A resolution from the board of trustees says at least some students can return to the Tuscaloosa campus starting this week. The university system plans to respond to COVID-19 heading into the fall semester, but some issues may go beyond the classroom. “We are excited that we’re able to release our campus plan for return to operations for the fall semester,” University of Alabama President Stuart Bell said.   MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama on Monday reached more than 30,000 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, a milestone that came as health officials expressed concern about a recent surge in cases.   As of Monday, Alabama had 30,031 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, with more than a quarter of the cases reported in the last two weeks. More than 830 people in the state have died.   BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Atlanta-area business leader will become the first Black chief executive of Birmingham's regional chamber of commerce.  The Birmingham Business Alliance said Kenneth E. Coleman has been named president and CEO of the economic development organization.   MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities in Mobile, Alabama, say they've made a second arrest in a more than 20-year-old homicide.  Police say 40-year-old Dammon Wright surrendered at the Mobile County Metro Jail on Monday. He's charged with murder in the slaying of 24-year-old Marcel Chandler, who was found shot to death inside a wrecked car in December 1999.   MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama and much of the Deep South are seeing a spike in coronavirus cases, concerning public health officials and people like state Rep. Merika Coleman who have lost loved ones.  Over the past two weeks, Alabama had the second highest number of new cases per capita in the nation. South Carolina was fourth. Louisiana and Mississippi were also in the top 10.   TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — NASCAR says a noose was found in the garage stall of Bubba Wallace on Sunday at the NASCAR race in Talladega, Alabama.  Wallace is the only full-time Black driver in NASCAR's elite Cup Series. Two weeks ago, he successfully pushed for NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag at its tracks and properties.   AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Spring and summer graduates of Auburn University will be recognized in two ceremonies in August.  The university, in a news release Tuesday, said the ceremonies are planned for Saturday, Aug. 8, at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Officials say the stadium was the overwhelming choice of a sample of graduates asked for feedback on various commencement plans. Both ceremonies will be live-streamed for guests unable to attend.   MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State representatives and civil rights groups in Alabama have called on the state’s governor to expand voting options ahead of November’s general elections because of the health risk to voters.  When I was a child, I had a stuffed toy dog I named "Fluffy" because he was soft and - well - fluffy.  I could hug him and feel comforted.   So I don't have any problem believing an animatronic cat might stimulate the memory and imagination of a dementia patient.
