STATEMENT

To promise eternal progression is to push the concept of the future perpetually out of reach, approaching the virtual. Modern cities create illusionary and symbolic dimensions where construction, destruction and decay abstract the notions of history and memory, the new is built on the new.
The mix of ruins, monuments and newer constructions -from across ages- form a graveyard of ideas, symbolising what was once considered ‘the future’.

Housed by augmented reality technologies, the spatial sound installationVoices from Your Future Past draws attention to the dream-like fallacy of technological illusion, the same illusion that focuses our perspective on the future and thereby removes us from the reality of the present.

Using the voice as instrument for spatial exploration,it aims to acknowledge and harness the sense of disconnection we feel in the virtual worlds in which we have been forced to live and feel, particularly in the last year.

It is staged in full recognition of the reality that there are few real spaces where people can truly meet. Rather than dealing in discourses of ‘hope’, Voices from Your Future Past confronts the audience with the irreality of virtual presence despite our human desire and necessity to connect with it.

In the blurred scapes of our city, a voice traverses and bends the boundaries between 3D cybernetic worlds and the spaces left behind. We come to understand that we rely on a reciprocal alliance between listening, appropriate images and the subversive effect of a present moment.

“Voices from your future past” is a sound work conceived by sound artists and composers Davide Luciani, Fabio Perletta, spatial sound artist Jordan Juras, and for the Oslo edition they have collaborated with Norwegian artist and singer Stine Janvin. It is curated by Daniela Arriado and produced by
Art Republic and Studio Mote.

The work is presented by Son.AR, a collective and curatorial-research project dedicated to aural research in relation to mixed media realities, sonic arts and public spaces.
Premiered at Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, through smartphone devices (Iphone, Android), the spatial sound installation will meet with Ultima's venues and locations, bridging with their site specificity, and expanding the indoor program to public space.

The piece can be experienced for free by using a smartphone and headset.
The installation is locatedin proximity of the following locations and venues: Blå, Atelier Nord, Sentralen, Oslo Kunstforening, The Norwegian National Opera.

The audience will be invited to take a journey through their local environment, seeking out physical-virtual sites of specific listening experiences. The piece can be experienced individually at each location or as a sound walk.

“Voices from your future past” will also be presented as a live multichannel concert at Blå, the 16th September with the artists on stage.
