Forgotten Heritage

Forgotten Heritage

Web-based visual database of artists and artworks, 2018

Forgotten Heritage is a visual database of artists and artworks of the European avant-garde. Several art archives across Europe have brought together about 8,000 entries and made them tangible in their context. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of avant-garde artists from Poland, Estonia, Croatia, France and Belgium, who were active in the second half of the 20th century. The sophisticated design opens up a fascinating network of works, artists and places of action.

The project is the recent implementation of The Visual Archive, a technology developed by Plural, which facilitates the display of digital collections and datasets.

Using web technologies like React.js, d3.js and pixie.js, the application lets people interact with archival data in new ways and make hidden connections graspable. For the curation of the content, the sophisticated Visual Archive Backend system makes it easy for both professional and less tech-savvy users to edit large amounts of data.

Generative LED-Wall display, Mann+Hummel, Ludwigsburg, 2016

A large 17 x 5 m LED wall is the central element of the new corporate museum of filter manufacturer Mann+Hummel in Ludwigsburg, Germany. 5,670 filter elements are mounted onto monochrome LED tiles. Accompanying the screen, an extensive audio system enhances the room with differentiated sound. The subject of the audiovisual experience are information and visualisations about the company’s expertise, locations and statistics. The context is provided by neon light words, which surround the LED area.

A custom control software was developed by Markus Lerner to facilitate the display of generative real-time animations, bar and line charts as well as a world map, which highlights the global locations of the company. The application features an intuitive timeline editor for the design and arrangement of the content. Besides the DMX output for the LED display, the software also controls the sound and the neon lights.

The animations were designed in collaboration with TheGreenEyl, Berlin.

The Emirati National House

The Emirati National House

Interactive map of the United Arab Emirates, 2016

A high-resolution interactive multitouch map was developed for the National Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates at the 15th international architecture exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia.

It provides insights into the geography and landscape of the UAE, as well as the diversity in typology of the Emirati National House, also know as the Sha’abi (folk) housing model, applied across the Emirates.

Multiple visitors simultaneously are able to zoom in to neighborhoods to examine their qualities and view photographs documenting the unique features of the Sha’abi houses. An overview map, where the currently selected map areas are indicated, provides general orientation within the country.

The Emirate National house was introduced in the 1970s to settle transient population and provide modern amenities. Architecturally it was based on a courtyard housing typology derived from traditional precedents. As the resident’s needs evolved, a series of changes took place: functional ones likes the addition of rooms, enlargement of living spaces and the raising of enclosure walls to ensure privacy as well as aesthetic or symbolic ones: replacing entrance doorways and repainting outer walls. These modifications resulted in visual diversity, moving away from a monotonous appearance.

The exhibition curated by Prof. Yasser Elsheshtawy, intents to move the urban housing discourse in the UAE to one that is grounded in the every day life of its citizens.

The exhibition is open to the public from May 28 until November 27, 2016.

Update: The interactive map is on display again as part of the exhibition ›Untold Stories Retold‹ at Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi, from 07 March until 24 June 2018.

Travelscope

Travelscope

A visual exploration of the travel freedom attached to passports, 2016

The weight and the travel freedom attached to a passport vary drastically across nationalities. International visa-regulations are very complex and often non-transparent. They reflect the economical and geopolitical situations as well as the relationships of countries.

This project aims to cast some light on these structures and make it easy to find out which countries an individual of a certain nationality can travel to without a visa or with visa on arrival. The destination country can be intuitively selected by clicking/tapping the map, via the live search field or by choosing it from the country list. In the "Visa-free sources" mode, you can alternatively explore the number of countries whose nationals can enter a specific country without a visa or with visa on arrival. The GDP and population modes are added for reference. Other modes can be implemented in the future.

This web application features a responsive design which works across browsers, platforms and screen sizes, as long as WebGL is available. Since WebGL is now supported by iOS, it also works on recent iOS devices running iOS 8+. Recent Android versions are supported as well.

Travelscope is listed at Chrome Experiments and has been selected an Official Honoree in The 20th Annual Webby Awards.

Hersbruck/Happurg

Hersbruck/Happurg

Interactive multitouch table at the Hersbruck/Happburg documentation site, 2016

The second largest satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp was located in the town of Hersbruck, where 9,000 prisoners from all over Europe were held captive between July 1944 and April 1945. They were forced to dig a tunnel system in the Houbirg mountain for an armament factory in the nearby town of Happurg. Due to the extreme conditions in the camp and during the labor, around 4,000 prisoners died in Hersbruck and Happurg.

The Hersbruck/Happburg documentation site consists of two exhibition modules pointing to each other: a media installation in Hersbruck at the former location of the camp and an open air exhibition module in Happurg at the former place of forced labor: the prisoners were forced to commute 4.5 km by foot between these two locations all year round.

The Hersbruck installation features a projection of a 360° panoramic video of the surroundings of Hersbruck focussing on historically relevant places. A large multitouch table displaying the names of all the 9,000 known prisoners was designed and developed by Markus Lerner in collaboration with Bertron Schwarz Frey, who created the exhibition architecture for both locations. By touching the highlighted names, multiple visitors can simultaneously explore 90 representative biographies of prisoners from various countries featuring stories, animated quotes and images.

Wortarbeit

Wortarbeit

Multi-touchscreen installation at Grimmwelt Kassel, Germany, 2015

Words are not static. They don’t have fixed meanings. Language is constantly evolving and will continue to.

The famous German Dictionary (1838–1854/1961) by the Brothers Grimm attempts to create a “natural history of words” by focussing on associations and connections between the words rather than their abstract definitions.

Located in the newly opened Grimmwelt Kassel, Germany, “Wortarbeit” attempts to capture the visitors’ associations with words, in reference to the work of the Brothers Grimm. Within a predefined set of formulas (word connections), one word has to be explained by another word entered by the visitor. The results is a chain that grows endlessly word by word.

While one touchscreen is waiting for input, the visitors can explore the existing chain of words in various views on the other screens: chronologically, alphabetically, by popularity and through the semantic net, which reveals the complexity of the definitions entered by the visitors.

Visitors can also extend an independent chain of words in english.

The installation was designed and developed in collaboration with TheGreenEyl, Berlin, media planning by Stefan Helling.

Mendelssohn-Effektorium

Mendelssohn-Effektorium

A WHITEvoid project

Virtual orchestra for the Mendelssohn-Haus Leipzig, 2014

The Mendelssohn-Effektorium is a virtual orchestra at the Mendelssohn-Haus in Leipzig. It was developed and produced by WHITEvoid. Markus Lerner was commissioned for the Screen Design and OpenGL software development.

13 speakers with vertical displays are arranged behind a conductor’s stand, each one representing a different group of instruments or choir voices. Visitors can select one of the works of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy at the stand and conduct the virtual orchestra or choir by moving the coductor’s baton. The speed of the recordings is then adjusted in real-time. Voice groups can be controlled individually and different room situations can be set. The installation also allows one to compare modern and historical instruments.

The vertical screens can display the names of the voices, the sound level or an artistic interpretation of the voice groups influenced by the volume and character of each instrument/voice.

The idea for the Effektorium originated in the cooperation between Studio Bertron Schwarz Frey and WHITEvoid. Sound production and programming by Aconica.

Interactive screen display for tade fair stand, 2008

An interactive screen display was developed for the OSRAM stand at the light+building trade fair in Frankfurt in collaboration with ART+COM.

Climate protection being the theme of the installation, each visitor is estimated to have the decision making power on over 1,540 tons of CO₂. This amount could be potentially reduced by implementing more efficient lighting. In order to emphasise the influence each individual has on the climate change, the number of trees necessary to compensate this CO2 emission is displayed.

A tracking camera records the number of visitors who enter the OSRAM stand in real time. Every new visitor triggers the growth of a new tree in the foreground of the screen. As the number of visitors increase the tree thicket gets denser as well.

The total number of viewers on one day, their CO2 saving potential and the corresponding number of trees are displayed on the top part of the LED screen.

Reactive Sparks

Light installation in an urban environment, 2007

A new display for OSRAM Seven Screens in Munich was created on behalf of ART+COM, Berlin. OSRAM Seven Screens is an installation of seven double-sided vertical screens in front of the OSRAM main office in Munich, next to the highway “Mittlerer Ring”, one of the most congested roads in Munich and Germany.

For the display Reactive Sparks, the traffic on the street is tracked in real-time; each vehicle creates a spark which moves across the screens. The Waves in the lower part of the display represent the amount of traffic in the past few minutes. More traffic results in higher waves with faster movement. The installation conveys the idea of energy and movement translated it into a visual representation. The warm colours create a warm spot in the gray winter landscape. The display will run until April 2008.

Radiation Culture

Radiation Culture

Indicating mobile radiation in real space, 2004

Radiation culture is an interactive installation that visualizes the spatial distribution of mobile radiation.

Electromagnetic radiant energy feeds a synthetic bioindicator. The visual display uses the metaphor of algal growth in places of strong insolation. The absorption range in the electromagnetic spectrum, however, is shifted from visible light to long-wave radiation.

The installation refers to a space, where mobile sources of radiation like mobile phones are. This can be both a room inside a building and an area of public space, for example a place, where many people frequent. At places of concentrated radiation an alga-like shape begins to grow. It is loosely connected and can freely move in space.

Anticipation & Reality

Anticipation & Reality

Intermediate degree in the Digital Media Class, 2003

My intermediate diploma in the Digital Media Class deals with the relationship of anticipation and reality. A series of interactive screen applications explores the difference between the anticipated future and the actual reality.

Anticipation
Anticipation is the expectation or the mental idea of an event in the future. It originates from the ability of a subject to imagine a future. It can happen consciously or unconsciously.

Reality
The term of Reality describes the actual future reality, e.g. the consequences of an action. The mental expectations of an observer can turn out to be true or false.

Work
Research, idea, concept, design, Flash programming, documentation

Assigment
Open assigment, but the project was supposed to deal with digital media.

Website and CD-Rom for the Basic Course of the Digital Media Class, 2003

For the basic course 2002/2003 in the Digital Media Class a documentation website and CD-Rom was developed. The Basic course was supervised by Ralph Ammer.

An interactive menu in the top left corner provides access to information on the participants of the course and their works. The layout is scalable and adapts to the screen resolution automatically. The menu was designed by the group, the programming was done in collaboration with Andre Stubbe.
