Hudson's department store in downtown Detroit isn't going to top the 727-foot Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center on the Detroit riverfront, said Matt Cullen, CEO of Dan Gilbert's Bedrock LLC real estate company. The RenCen hotel is the tallest building in the state. It will not be the tallest, Cullen said of the Hudson's tower in response to a question from the Detroit Free Press. As someone who frequents downtown Detroit on the weekends and stays until after dark, I want to see if anyone else has felt substantially less safe this summer than at any point in the recent past. Last night I encountered mini bikes speeding down the sidewalk, packs of circling non-street legal 4 wheelers, several cars with people hanging out every window, heroine being done openly in CM Park, among other examples of rude, reckless, and inconsiderate behavior. The media keeps telling us this is the new normal and my worry is if that's true we'll see all the positive steps made in the last 10 or so years backtracked pretty quickly. Who wants to stroll down woodward with mini bikes flying by you, or eat dinner watching 4 wheelers circling the block. Has anyone else noticed this? If so what are your thoughts on its continuation? Will it have any long term effects on the development of downtown? Autumn Color Peak is Here One blessings of living in the Detroit-Windsor metro is that before winter kicks our behinds and the darkening Grayvember days descend upon us we are treated to a spectacular color show as Mother Nature sings her eternal song ignoring all the bluster of human affairs.I have been enjoying the display for the last two days, first with a meandering drive along country dirt roads northwest of Milford and today walking along the Upper Rouge in Farmington's Shiawassee Park. I have driven on them here and in other countries and find them the most efficient way of moving traffic, once you get used to them. They avoid unnecessary starting and stopping as well as being more aesthetic, in that the center provides an opportunity for sculpture or plantings.
