About the College Our Schools This past Friday the College of Design lost one of its most distinguished alumni and a dedicated supporter. John C. “Jack” Portman, III passed away at his home in Atlanta, Georgia, from natural causes.Jack earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Georgia Tech in 1971 and practiced architecture for 47 years with Portman Architects. For the past three years, he served as the firm's Chairman and CEO. He pioneered their groundbreaking entry into China in the 1980s, including Shanghai Center, the first major development by a Western architect in China. Jack created the Portman Prize Studio Competition, inspiring our students for more than 20 years to stretch their design skills and imagine a more vibrant Atlanta. Each year, outstanding architects come to Georgia Tech to participate in the Portman Prize competition as well as teach extraordinary studio experiences to our students. Our graduate students use design to solve real-world problems and develop new technologies. Our six research centers focus on a range of crucial issues, many of which impact our daily lives. Our topics include the development of cities and regions, the healthcare environment, helping those with physical limitations, and new ways to create music. Following health and public safety orders during a pandemic is especially difficult for more than 61 million Americans who navigate life with a disability. They require access and support at home, at work, at school, within their community, and while traveling. To that end, the CDC Foundation awarded a contract to the Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation (CIDI) to help assess, develop, and produce accessible emergency materials in response to COVID-19. The Cognitive Empowerment Program s Innovation Accelerator is offering seed grants to support research.
