Who'd a thought a scorching heat wave with NO WIND?Yet we counted 6 intrepid Islanders on the Bay who were persistent enough to get in at least a little good sailing. An initial 5 signed up for a repeat of the Summer Sailstice course to rally from the west side of the Bay Bridge, around Angel Islnad, and back to finish at the Bay Bridge on the east side of Treasure Island. Bella Luna, Jonesque Jones, Kapai and Vanishing Animal arrived in the starting area by the center block in the 1130 - 1145 time frame, ready for a 1200 start. So follow this link to get the rest of the story.Newsletter Editor Phill Seaman has given us a Special Issue featuring a nice selction of pictures of our great Islander Asociation boats and folks for your enjoyment. Check it out: I-36 Special Issue. Here's your link to Newsletter Editor Phill Seaman's great September issue. You'll particularly enjoy Bert Vermeer's articles about escaping the pandemic in beautiful Canadian cruising waters. See if you can find the picture of our Cruise Chair lounging in a hammock while sipping a cool one in the Delta. I-36 September 2020 Newsletter.Summer SailsticeSummer Sailstice COVID Compliant Rally 6/20/20What a Blast! Ten rugged Islander 36s with a total of 26 crew aboard assembled for a COVID-Compliant Summer Sailstice Rally around Angel Island. Mother Nature provided a rigorous test of seamanship with gusts up to 30 and two boats sailed a shortened course and one retired. But everyone had fun and we devised a crazy points system to encourage families to let kids and non-sailing spouses skipper, and added points for submitting pictures and carrying "Virtual Crew." Virtual Crew are other I-36 owners who volunteered to "crew" aboard the participating boats. In all we had 9 Virtual crew for a grand total of 19 Islander 36s represented for summer Sailstice. We had 8 boats submit a total of 123 pictures and 9 provided a paragraph from their perspective. We "scored" the rally counting the various "points" as seconds per mile for a rating adjustment. Below you will find our Rally Instructions, the data for awarding "points", the crew lists and the results of the "Raw" score (closest to an actual race), the Corrected Score for alternate skippers, Virtual Crew and flying the I-36 Burgee, and finally the Fun Score adding points for submitting pictures for this web page. Below the Results you will find the experience from each boat and a selection of their submitted pictures. It sure felt great to be back on the water and waving to friends. Here's a like to great fun and lots of pictures: Summer Sailstice Rally 6/20/20.Your Islander 36 Association, like every other sailing organization around the world, is coping with the situation to figure out how to get back on the water while staying safe for our members while adhering to the rules and regulations of the various jurisdictions where we sail. The Bay Area is relatively unique in that our typical summer season touches seven different counties - all of which may have different regulatory details that impact being on the water. In this unprecedented time Jim Robinson, long time member and past fleet champion for may years with Pilot, initiated a global response based on the 1926 rescue of the crew of British steamship Antinoe by the SS President Roosevelt. For over 80 hours the Roosevelt stood by flying signal flags Alpha over India: "I will not abandon you." In the 94 years since then the flag signals have changed until today the equivalent is Charlie, Golf over One. Thanks to Jim, these flags now fly at yacht clubs from the Netherlands to Australia. Here's a link to Jim's article that appeared in the 'Lectronic Latitude of 5/5/20: We Will Not Abandon You. It's well worth a read! (And remember to scroll down through the article as the pictures leave some blank space at the bottom of pages.) That 770 were produced and the majority are still sailing today from harbors around the world, proves the point. It flourished because of its genuine sailing attributes, its success in racing, and the establishment of the I-36 Association on San Francisco Bay. All of these showcased the Islander 36. Establishing a web site in 1998 provided Islander owners around the country, and eventually around the world, a forum to share knowledge and support each other. We only have membership lists from the late 1990's, but sorting through 15 samples about every other year, we have learned that at least an astonishing 556 unique boat names have been members of the association, and when counting up boats that have been owned by multiple owners, we have had a whopping 697 unique boat-owner listing. We're woefully short on data from our founding in 1974 through at least 1990, so if you have any old fleet lists, please send them along! Here's a link to the spreadsheet with the select year fleet lists, and on the second tab, the sorted list which shows how many times a boat appeared in the various list and the list of unique boat-owner names. Boat Names By Year.To celebrate, we are drafting an article about our Association History and invite our members, past and present, to attend the Spring and Fall Meetings to share your stories about life on an Islander 36. Here's a link to the work in progress - it will be updated (and corrected with your input!) as we go along. Only 42 of over 200 entries made it through fog, light winds, and calms to finish within the time limit. Three Bridge Fiasco - Tales from the boats.'Round Alameda Parade 1/1/20What a great way to start off a new decade! Seven hearty Islander 36s were represented on the three boats that sailed (OK, motored) to the great feast at Aeolian Yacht Club. It was even hot in the sun at times, and as if Aeolian's tasty chili, jalapeno cornbread, black eyed peas and generous Bloody Marys weren't enough, three of the seven soldiered on to partake of Clam Chowder Hot Dogs at Encinal Yacht Club.
