squawking and the like

parrots and chickens make so much noise
but the songbird quietly sings
soft songs of love and freedom
because truth doesn’t need
to clamor to be heard

at the soul wash

in the mud, a hole in my heart
swollen with pain, addicted to patterns
so great was my need
“I can’t go on.”
each came back poor, each came back alone
existing to silently scream
“I deserve to be seen!”
in a fog of smoke, an illusion of fire
we showed ourselves to ourselves
lovable, but intolerable
wicked and twisted in some way
chameleons changing color, not character
“Don’t you know me at all?”

it didn’t take long to see
who the snakes were in the house
No longer welcome
in the palace I build

famine

my eyes want to eat you
to consume your face
the scruff on your skin
those cheekbones
thin lips, wrinkly eyes

to feed on your physicalness
broad chest and strong arms,
lanky body, scraggly hair
pinky toes that hover above the ground

hungry for your walk
shoulders back, proud gait
as you turn away…

I do not chase.
There is no nourishment in what I crave.

the smell of freshly-turned earth hung thick around us
and everything we planted, died

into fire to burn
lion-hearted and roaring
not hiding and howling
like the frightened wolf
who never learns
and the one
who is left
behind

when she plays, she plays to win.
