Description:

Today’s community quilt came to me from an anonymous quilter.  I received several tops from this person, and what a treat it was to see each one.  As you can tell from the pictures, Anonymous Quilter is an excellent seamstress — each corner is matched perfectly, no stray threads, all seams were neatly pressed.  Anonymous Quilter used coordinating charm squares and maybe some jelly rolls for the sashing and borders.  I don’t recognize this line of fabric, but maybe someone can identify the designer and manufacturer (or maybe Anonymous will provide those details, anonymously, of course).I forwarded today’s quilt top to Cheryl in Dallas because it is 78” x 92” and she makes bed size quilts.  Cheryl sent lots of pictures of her process to finish this quilt. The workmanship on this top was so precise that it lays on the quilt frame perfectly flat, no wrinkles, no waves, no ripples.  This is a longarmer’s dream. Look at these strawberries!  Which is your favorite color scheme?(A) Strawberries on Lovely Yellow(B) Strawberries on Gorgeous Gray(C) Strawberries on Sunny OrangeCheryl in Dallas used a strawberry pattern — what else? — to quilt this top.The computer that runs the longarm shows the strawberry pattern on the screen.  The digital pattern is called Strawberry Fields by Patricia Ritter.  It is available at Urban Elementz.  It looks like someone is watching SEC football while the machine is running. It’s always a victory to get to the last quilting row.  Then on to trimming and binding. And the reveal on the backyard fence. And a close up of the cute little charm squares.Cheryl in Dallas said she had to ponder for a while on the choice of binding for Anonymous’s quilt top.  She didn’t have matching fabric, nor any solids that appeared in the quilt, so . . . this orange stripe was chosen.  I think it looks pretty good as the only stripe in the quilt. The backing started out as two sheets.  This is a quick way to make a backing big enough for this generous twin size quilt, just cut the dark fabric approximately in half (no need to measure it).  Insert the light fabric between the two dark pieces.  Start quilting. You can see that the backing is not a perfect match for the green that Anonymous Quilter used, but it’s close and goes well with the binding fabric. You can see the strawberry quilting motif better on the solid backing.  It’s a detail that only a quilter will notice. This quilt is going to Oregon for victims of the September wildfires in the Echo Mountain Complex area.  I hope it finds a home with a strawberry lover, or maybe someone who is captured by these soft colors.  Good work, Cheryl in Dallas and Anonymous Quilter.  Although the quilt recipient won’t know your names, that person will know someone loves them enough to make this beautiful quilt.I love seeing these quilts finished and off to someone in need.  This is a cheery quilt I am sure it will be loved!!  THANKS!!Like this:Like Loading... Karl is still looking for a house.  For those of you who don t know, Karl is my son.  He just turned 28.  He s living with me.When Kramer was sick, he was teaching in Texas then when Kramer was nearing the end, he came home.  Then he stayed.  I was totally okay with it.  I wasn t sure I was ready for a big house and only me in it so it was a good arrangement while Karl started to make the big decision back to Texas or find a job in Iowa.He was a teacher so he had the summer to decide.  A month or so into summer he decided to stay in Iowa a year and then reassess.  Well, the year has passed and he s decided to stay in Iowa.  So he s ready to settle in and find himself a house.  He s been looking for about six months now but there aren t a lot of houses for sale in the area.  I ve shown you a few none have been right.Karl was excited when a house in a neighboring town came up for sale.  The house was around $43,500.  Karl called the realtor to get an idea if he was interested in the house.  The only time available to see it was at a time I wasn t available so Karl went and looked. He doesn t know a lot about houses neither do I for that matter.  Karl ended up asking for a second look at a time when I could go with.  We had to take Carver as Kalissa and Craig were with Gannon at the doctor s having a procedure done. Before we left we told Carver he had to be good.  We told him he needed him to look at all of the walls, floors, and ceiling to try to find cracks to see if it would be a good house for Uncle Karl. Here s Carver with his hands in his pockets.  He kept his hands in his pockets the whole time.  He was so good more on that in a bit, but now I ll tell you about the house.Immediately, the house gave me a bad vibe.  We lived in this town 28 years ago and something nagged on my brain that there was something about his house I should remember.  I just couldn t remember what it was.The house wasn t cleaned out yet.  It was full of stuff mostly just junk.I tried to keep an open mind but things were so shoddy.Notice the cabinets don t match.Heck, the countertops don t even match not even the same height. You re looking at the tiny dining area and the paneling.  Ick.The ceiling was this I was less and less impressed as we went through but tried to remember that houses can be fixed.  My house was no masterpiece when we bought it.Then we headed to the basement.  Basements tell so much about houses but they are often pretty creepy.  Again, I tried to have an open mind but I feared that if the main floor was in such disarray of stuff.  What would the basement be like   Here s what we saw Continue reading Like this:Like Loading... What a crazy Saturday here at the Kramer house.  It all started Friday.  Buck was planning on coming home and deer hunting with Karl and some family friends.  He planned on bringing some of the kids and I d have them over the weekend while he hunted.Kalissa had to work the overnight shift on Thursday and Friday so I had the boys and Craig came to pick them up at supper time so we were going to have a big family supper. Then Kelli called me and told me there were doing a mandatory on-call for her as they didn t need as many nurses.  That always puts her in a bind as if she is on-call they can call her and she needs to be at the hospital in 30 minutes.  That leaves no time to get a babysitter for Georgia.  So I told her to come home, stay overnight with Georgia and if she got called in, I d just take care of Georgia. So after a big family supper with Craig, Carver, Gannon, Buck, Scotty, Karl, Kelli, Georgia, and I, we hung out and made plans for the next day.Buck and Karl were going hunting.  Craig had to work so Kelli and I would keep Carver and Gannon along with Scotty and Georgia.  Kelli decided we d do the Christmas baking. Before Craig left I asked him to check my ice maker on the refrigerator again UGH.  YES, it was frozen again.  This is so annoying.Craig had Carver helping him and I had Georgia and Scotty helping me.At least we know what the problem is and can fix it.That was Friday night, now onto Saturday.I was up at um on Saturday starting what I could without Kelli.  She was up a short time later.  I started baking and she made breakfast for the kiddos. They were a busy bunch and kept us hopping but we managed to get a lot done.Kelli wanted to give cookie/goodie platters to her neighbors.  She s been pretty sick with this pregnancy so I knew it would be hard for her to accomplish that so I figured I could help her by helping her bake and boy oh boy did we bake!We madetwo batches of the Ritz peanut butter cookiestwo batches of the Popcorn crackone batch of Muddy Buddies and bagged that uptwo batches of pretzel/rolo/M Msone batch of Christmas M M cookiestwo batches of Waffle Cookies with white frosting and sprinklesone batch of Mud Puddle Cookiesone batch of Brownie/Rolo CookiesThere are links to the recipes for some of the things we made.  Simply click on the word to get to the recipe. The kids left us alone and played until we started needing the kitchen table.  Then they wanted to be in on the action.Buck lives south of us and he has a snow plow route and had to go home as they got 4 of snow.  It was sad to see Scotty go but such is the life of a snowplow driver.Shortly after that, Craig came and picked up the boys.By now it was noon and Kelli needed to nap so she d be ready for working the Saturday overnight shift.  It was noon, and we had done great getting all the baking done But the kids had trashed the house while we were baking Continue reading Like this:Like Loading...
