A Western Buddhist Practice Center, through the grace of His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa. Welcome! The Dharma Fellowship is a Western group of Buddhist Meditation Yoga practitioners following the spiritual direction of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, supreme head of the Karma-Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism. In our case it is the Buddhist Path of practice, treasured for centuries in the East—India, Tibet, Burma, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, etc.—that teaches us the best way to enter into meditation. Relevant to anyone of any background, the Buddha's gentle and compassionate Path of Awakening cultivates a life of physical and mental improvement, wellbeing, happiness, healing, love, clarity, wisdom and inner peace. We believe that the journey of humanity on planet Earth innately involves an ongoing evolution in consciousness. This gradual but intentional development of human consciousness over the natural course of evolution can be greatly enhanced through the skillful practice of meditation and yoga, even to the point where certain individuals are able to make a significant leap forward in awareness – a spiritual 'breakthrough' referred to as 'enlightenment' or Awakening. Over the last two thousand five hundred year history of Buddhism, uncountable numbers of individuals have accomplished this fruitful transformation in consciousness, beginning with the Buddha himself. This is testimony to the authentic success of the teachings. It is through this pursuit of greater awareness and ultimately an understanding of the intrinsic nature of the mind that life is at last made truly meaningful. A fundamental purpose of the Dharma Fellowship is to disseminate in the West an accurate knowledge of the age-old traditional techniques and wisdom that can lead to this understanding. Translations of Buddhist texts and an assortment of membership articles about Buddha-Dharma, Buddhist monasticism, yoga and meditation, appear on this website's Library page. We have active city centers in New York and Vancouver (Canada) where members gather for communal enjoyment, study and the group practice of meditation. Also, as part of its mission to disseminate authentic knowledge about meditation, and to support a place where meditation can be practiced in a traditional manner, the Dharma Fellowship has established a rustic retreat center called 'Kunzang Samten Yangtse Hermitage' with resident monastics on an island off the west coast of Canada, where regular meditation retreats under the guidance of different teachers (from a variety of religious and non-religious traditions) are held year round.
