April 22, 2020 -BIA-Hawaiiis pleased to announce the appointment of Jessica Leorna as the organization s new Chief Executive Officer. Leorna brings to the position a wealth of knowledge and an array of experiences in the building industry. She will join BIA-Hawaii on April 27, 2020.Leorna has an extensive history of organizational and operations management experience. As the Executive Officer for the Interior Alaska Building Association, the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) affiliate in Fairbanks, Alaska, Leorna worked for over six years in association management, leading volunteer engagement, overseeing tradeshows, events, marketing activities, and public relations. She worked closely with the Alaska State Home Building Association and its lobbyist and local government officials to advocate on behalf of the building industry in Alaska.Additionally, Leorna has nine years of experience in the financial investment/ technology sector in California. As part of her positions with BV Capital, eVentures and Citrix Online, she managed budgets and financials, supervised employees, and acted as Finance Liaison through a public acquisition of a startup company with its main product being software as a service. Through this process, she gained experience working with executive leadership and department heads, while assisting them in navigation of the transition to a publicly traded company. I am honored to have been selected as BIA-Hawaii s next CEO. It is a privilege to be part of an organization representing the Voice of Hawaii s construction industry, said Leorna. BIA-Hawaii is led by a mission to advocate on behalf of the housing and building industry. I see tremendous opportunity to contribute to developing the sustainability and growth of the building industry in Hawaii. I look forward to serving the membership and industry. We are fortunate to have someone of Jessica s caliber and experience to lead BIA-Hawaii, said Dwight Mitsunaga, BIA-Hawaii Board of Directors President. The industry is at a critical juncture and we need leadership to successfully implement our strategy, take advantage of the market opportunities ahead and unite our membership. Jessica is a strong communicator and has a solid understanding of our industry and markets. The Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA) is The VOICE of the Construction Industry. The BIA promotes our members through advocacy and education, and provides community outreach programs to enhance the quality of life for the people of Hawaii. The BIA is a not-for-profit trade organization chartered in 1955, affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).Aloha! As this year s Building Industry Association of Hawaii President, I would like to thank you for your continued support; and for allowing me to represent our members and the interests of Hawaii s building communities. Since its founding in 1955, BIA-Hawaii has worked hard to deliver on its mission and through its association with the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) maintains that: The Building Industry Association of Hawaii is THE VOICE of the Construction Industry. The BIA promotes our members through advocacy and education, and provides community outreach programs to enhance the quality of life for the people of Hawaii. BIA-Hawaii is hard at work advocating and lobbying on issues affecting the construction prices of Hawaii s homes. Our Government Relations and Building Codes Committees have been reaching out on many critical issues here in Hawaii statewide with our City and County Councils, State Legislature and Hawaii s Congressional Delegation. BUILD-PAC HAWAII continues to serve as the BIA s political action committee while our Partners in Housing Alliance works tirelessly to provide affordably-priced home options for our residents while also addressing Hawaii s homeless crisis.BIA-Hawaii s activities, scheduled throughout each year, provide opportunities to showcase and support our members. Our two annual winter and summer building trade shows provide ideas, products and services for new homes and remodeling projects; while also providing a venue to showcase and support our contractors, suppliers and building trades. BIA Hawaii also supports its members through networking events, general membership meetings and its annual Building Industry Design Construction Awards Gala. I encourage you all to join us for this wonderful event and to also consider showing off your great projects! Our Education Committee continues to provide for our members, our communities-at-large, and at the community college and university levels. Our staff provides education and training on essential topics throughout the state; even recently providing disaster relief training throughout Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. As the medical and education communities are already facing labor shortages, BIA-Hawaii has begun reaching out to high schools and middle schools to encourage interests and training in the construction fields. Our PACT program (Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training) also prepares Hawaii s at-risk students for apprenticeship opportunities; while our Leading Young Professionals (LYP) are reaching out to grow their membership. As I wish you all great success through 2020, I ask you to please connect or re-connect with BIA-Hawaii. You can really help us by soliciting new members, joining our committees, contributing your experiences and efforts, supporting our events, and donating much-needed funds giving us the resources to continue providing advocacy and education for the people of Hawaii. I look forward to continuing the legacies established by our founders.Mahalo and Best Regards!Together We Ensure Competitiveness and Growth of the Construction Industry in Hawaii. The Hawaii Building Industry Foundation has partnered with the Takitani Foundation to create a scholarship fund for students. The Building Industry Association of Hawaii s members build the living spaces and community that we call home.
