Description:

The Centre for Applied English Studies’ mission is to improve the academic literacy skills of undergraduate and postgraduate students at The University of Hong Kong. We run compulsory and elective undergraduate and postgraduate academic literacy courses for UGC-funded students. We provide UGC-funded students one-to-one language support services to develop a range of communication skills. We also run a Masters in Applied Linguistics and co-run a Masters in TESOL with the Faculty of Education. To support the wider HKU community, we offer workshops and courses for taught-postgraduate students and teach English courses for University of Hong Kong administration staff. We also supervise PhD students in the field of Applied Linguistics. Room 6.60, 6/F, Run Run Shaw Tower, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam, Hong Kong For enquiries: caes@hku.hk CAES2002: Digital Storytelling in English taps the potential of online teaching to create an experience like no other. NGL is a 12-credit free elective experiential learning course at HKU but it is at the same time so much more beyond just a course. Over the past 11 years, NGL has led 260 HKU undergraduates and 132 local secondary school students on their adventures in Cambodia, China, Myanmar or Thailand, teaching local marginalised youth English communication skills with our 40 community partner organisations.http://caes.hku.hk/ngl/ SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses) were launched in 2019 and use blended learning to focus on niche areas of academic language and other communication skills. Sessions fit around the English-in-the-Disciplineand Core University Englishassessment periods thus directly serving students' needs. Four SPOCs have been offered in the 2019-20 academic year with more currently in progress. https://caes.hku.hk/spocs/ The CiC initiative aims to enhance students’ communication skills in the social, academic and workplace environments. It does this through recognising HKU undergraduate courses that enhance students’ oral, written, visual and digital communication competence. The initiative also brings together teaching staff from across Faculties and build a community of practice of enhancing students’ communication competence. http://cics.hku.hk/ The General Language Advising programme offers one-to-one consultation sessions that assist students to develop language learning strategies on a longer-term basis. Conducted by experienced lecturers, such sessions aim to help students define their own learning goals, devise learning plans, engage in and reflect on learning activities and progress over time. https://caes.hku.hk/css/ The coronavirus outbreak and move to online teaching provided the impetus for ‘Teachers’ Lift’ - an inter-institutional podcast about teaching - which was made possible through a collaborative effort between HKU, HKUST, and PolyU. With university teachers’ questions and concerns in mind, TL takes the form of an informal dialogue between the show hosts and practitioners. It hopes to build and sustain a community of practice and aims to create opportunities for academics to engage in professional development. To subscribe and listen to TL visit: https://teacherslift.com. Published online bi-annually (in March and October), the Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics (AJAL) is an English language, international, blind-refereed journal. Its goal is to foster discussion and scholarship about the learning, teaching and use of English in Asian contexts.https://caes.hku.hk/ajal The Centre for Applied English Studies reaches out to the Hong Kong community through a series of developmental projects designed to provide language learning resources and to understand the needs of Hong Kong learners. The Centre has various projects that have made demonstrable impacts to benefit the community and business. https://caes.hku.hk/home/knowledge-exchange
