In August, our language department traveled down to the homelands of the Lenape to so-called Philadelphia. We were graciously welcomed to the American Philosophical Society to research Hodinohso:nih language materials in order to bring that knowledge back to our community. Our community in Oswe:gę’ has had very different experiences with ethnologists over time. Some were solely extractive, while others were respectfully collaborative. With this in mind, we understood the irony of this trip of going to a place where many of these collections had been stored. However, the distinct difference now is that there are non-Indigenous allies who are diligently working to restore these relationships with our community. It’s a turning point coming from a complex past. We were grateful to connect with the archivists and to be given a tour upon our arrival at APS. We began researching language materials, correspondence, digitized audio and written material, as well as field notes. Everyone we met there was very kind and helpful in directing us to the materials we were seeking out, as well as just connecting and learning from each other. In the recent past APS has developed a relationship with Deyohaha:ge: Indigenous Knowledge Centre at SNP to return materials back to our community, so this has been an ongoing process for us all. Upon returning to our community, we are continuing to brainstorm ways to make resources more accessible. If you are inquiring about language materials for your own personal learning, teaching purposes, research, etc. please do reach out. We would love to help you continue with your learning!
