I recently experienced the most frustrating and anxiety driven HST audit ever. And, as an accountant who deals with CRA audits on a day-to-day basis, this was really devastating.
It all started with CRA assigning an inexperienced auditor to carry out an HST audit on my proprietorship and management company. I was shocked when I received the audit proposal letter. The tax dispute put a lot of stress and pressure on us and our business because when an HST assessment is received appealing does not delay CRA collections. CRA wants its money even if the amount reassessed is wrong. The amount was significant, and CRA was insisting on payment or security.

The Canada Revenue Agency changed its position throughout the course of the audit and tax dispute. Counter analyzed the government’s position, identified the keystone facts, and a logical fallacy in the government’s argument and the evidence.
