Deaf people have subverted many barriers over time, whether ensuring education and accessibility or basic day-to-day rights. In sport it was no different, the deaf community has always been a pioneer, having created the second oldest multi-sport event in history and the first that involved people considered to be non-standard. Sport is something that unites everyone as a society, a bond that breaks differences and leads everyone to a path of respect, and the deaf have proved this with great determination and pride over time. The deaflympic movement is the link between sport and the deaf community, a banner of diversity and a landmark of equity in all corners of the world. To be involved with this movement is not only to commit to the future of society but to practice the act of empathy with those different from who we are.

The magnitude of the event, in addition to providing opportunities for integration, reflection and awareness to the participants and society, adds to the policies of this State of inclusion and strengthening of actions through sport. In this sense, I come to express the support of the State of Rio Grande do Sul in the accomplishment of the Twenty-Fourth edition of the Deaflympics, in the year of 2021, in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and inform that our State is willing to collaborate in the realization of this great event.

Deaflympics, which for the first time will be held in Latin America, will celebrate life, inclusion and sport. Inclusion is a priority of President Bolsonaro’s government.

It will be a milestone for the history of the Deaflympics also the first hosting city from South America.

We have a long tradition in sport events for the deaf. We have already hosted the South-American Championship for deaf people 2014 and the World Handball Championship for the deaf 2018. It is a honor to be the priority headquarters of Deaflympics 2021, which will be the biggest event ever registered in Rio Grande do Sul.
