Thank you for your financial support! November 12, 2020 Johnstown Johnnie Staff, Students and Parents: As I am sure you are aware, the state of Ohio is experiencing a significant increase in COVID-19 cases and this week Governor DeWine urged every Ohioan to stay vigilant in our fight against the spread of COVID-19.Our District leadership, like many of you, are watching this latest spike in positive cases closely. Our health and safety measures are working and while we are still not seeing the cases enter our school system at a high rate, we are beginning to see an increase in the number of close contact quarantined students and staff from outside sources. In light of the current situation, I want to share with you our next steps as a District and what you can expect in the coming days and weeks. We believe that being physically present at school is critical to student growth and development; but, we also balance that with the responsibility to provide a safe learning environment for students and staff. We are hopeful that we will be able to keep our positive cases low within our school district and complete the first semester with little interruption in instructional services. Throughout November and December we will continue to monitor the local data and we will plan for a return to the second semester under our current model of service delivery. However, please keep in mind that if the situation worsens with the spread of the virus within our school district, we must be ready at any time to move to full remote learning. We are not there yet; but, everyone needs to prepare for that possibility. The good news is our schools have proven to be a safe place for staff and students primarily because we are relentless in our mask-wearing, social distancing, cleaning and air purifying procedures. But we also know that we can t keep the spread in the community out of our schools indefinitely; we are beginning to see the effects of community spread on our staff already and continue to experience a shortage of substitutes. Anyone who holds a bachelor s degree and is interested in becoming a substitute teacher should contact Debbie Lowe in the district office at 740-967-6846. We also can always use more substitute cooks, bus drivers and custodians.Because of the incredible work of our staff, students and parents we have been able to successfully live with this virus now through the vast majority of the first semester. 75% of our students have attended school in-person five days per week and 25% of our students have taken advantage of our online Johnnie Learning Academy. Our students have been afforded the opportunity to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that only a few months ago we questioned if we would be able to allow. As we began this school year I said repeatedly that our ability to continue in-person instruction and extra-curricular activities will be dependent upon everyone s compliance with the established health and safety protocols 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Our schools have been safe; but, our activities outside of school are proving to cause spread that could impact our ability to continue doing many of the things we all enjoy. I strongly encourage everyone to remain diligent in wearing your masks, washing/sanitizing your hands frequently, disinfecting high touch areas of your home and workplace, staying home when you are feeling sick and to practice social distancing at all times. We are heading into our cherished holiday season and a time of year that we spend more time indoors. It is a time we all enjoy being around our family and friends; but, we must remain cautious and treat each other as if we, and those we are around, have the COVID-19 virus. We have all proved that we can do this already this first semester. Now we need to stay the course with these best practices. Thank you for your support and patience as we closely monitor the situation. Students and staff should continue following the flowchart that was provided at the beginning of the school year if you are experiencing any symptoms before coming to school. Your child s physical, social, emotional and mental health is just as important to our team as their academic success. Please reach out to your child s teacher or building principal for support if needed. More details will be coming from your building principal as we prepare for the second semester which begins January 4, 2021.Special Note: There will be no classes held on December 18th (last day of the first semester). All staff will report to school that day and will be working on necessary class changes, facility changes and content development for the second semester. No students should report to school on December 18th; however, they may work with their teachers for any online assistance they may need that day to complete first semester work. Sincerely,Dale L.
