In its inaugural cycle, the Foundation conferred its full initial commitment of more than $5 million to assist nearly eighty collecting institutions across more than twenty-five states in improving their energy efficiency. Some photographers captured the dynamic of big cities through a spontaneous pictorial language that often portrayed American society in a critical light. And, in a contrasting approach, others staged elaborate cinematic tableaux that grappled with photographic reality and illusion as well as with societal developments. The multidisciplinary and global curatorial approach includes painting, sculpture, dance, applied arts, photography, film, and performance art from Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the United States in order to tell a complex story with many voices.
