Caused by an infection with the Ebola virus, Ebola is often lethal in humans and nonhuman primates (such as monkeys and gorillas). Since 1970, there have been 18 confirmed outbreaks of Ebola. The illness has never been reported in humans in the United States. Symptoms of Ebola can appear as soon as 2 days, or as long as 21 days, after infection with the Ebola virus. Ebola symptoms can include vomiting; abdominal pain (or stomach pain); a dry, hacking cough; and a fever.
