Drive Through Alternative to Winterfest, Christmas in Color Leave a reply

Source: Flickr. ©Steven Wilson

If you had the opportunity to visit any of the Cedar Fair Winterfest events, the experience is absolutely fantastic! Live entertainment, specialty food beverage items, great photos ops, and even limited ride availability. In 2021, Winterfest will return to Californias Great America, Canadas Wonderland, Carowinds, Kings Dominion, and Kings Island. Sadly Winterfest has been dropped from the Worlds of Fun lineup. Knotts Berry Farm will also host their annual #MerryFarm event.

For years guests have been asking for some of the other Cedar Fair parks, notably Cedar Point, to offer a Winterfest style event. While guests may want it, a ton would need to be done to accommodate such an event. For example, many of the facilities are not outfitted with heat, which means bathrooms would not be able to be opened. Factor in the often wild weather that can come in off Lake Erie, hosting a Winterfest event can be unpredictable.

Back in 2020, Valleyfair partnered with a company to bring Christmas in Color, a drive-through experience featuring over one million lights synched to music to the park. While not a full-blown Winterfest event, the experience brought income to Cedar Fair for use of the facility.

Christmas in Color has announced for 2021, the event will be brought to Valleyfair and Dorney Park. Tickets are available for November 19, 2021-January 2, 2022, closed Thanksgiving day and Christmas day.

The Christmas in Color takes place in the parking lot of each park and not inside the gates.

So the question than becomes could we see something like this come to Cedar Point in the future?

While it is interesting to think about a drive-through experience coming to the Cedar Point parking lot, it is even more interesting to think about the park doing their own version inside the park.

They could bring guests into the park via the employee GateKeeper gate, then bring the vehicles onto the Wicked Twister midway. Turn up the drive in front of Melt, then turn down the midway in front of Scrambler and under Cork Screw. Guests could then drive around the park, through Frontier Town, past Millennium Force, and then out the gate where the food trucks often reside (across from Iron Dragon). Taking vehicles back down the front midway could be problematic to getting them back out of the park.

The potential Cedar Point drive-through experience would have Christmas lights and decorations throughout the drive path. Keeping guests in their vehicles maximizes through-put, while also minimizing the required work force. Some gate operators and security throughout the drive path, as well as some techs on hand should some lights go out. There would be no need to open restrooms, or food establishments. Overhead costs could be minimized in terms of labor.

The real question is would there be enough demand from locals. The big appeal of Cedar Point during the May-October season is friends and family make full vacations out of visiting the park and staying in the resorts, drawing crowds from around the world. With no resorts open, would there be enough draw to bring in the out-of-town guests.

If the majority of your attendance from a Cedar Point drive-through Christmas light event would be from season passholders, you are not necessarily seeing the incremental dollars brought in to justify the cost. Lets be honest, how many guests are going to buy a season pass to Cedar Point just because there is a winter drive-through without rides?

Could Flight Deck at Canadas Wonderland Be Going Away? Leave a reply

During our familys last trip to Canadas Wonderland in 2019, the boys and I decided to ride Flight Deck at Canadas Wonderland for the first time. The Vekoma roller coaster was opened in 1995 and themed after the Top Gun movie when the park was then owned by Paramount Parks. After Cedar Fair bought the Paramount Parks, the ride was renamed to Flight Deck. Now new clues hint that the ride may be on its last leg.

It is not too uncommon for the parks to announce the closure of a ride during Haunt season. After all, Kings Island announced the closure of their Vekoma Firehawk on Haunt night, 2018. So is this just a funny coincidence that the gravestone with RIP appears outside of Flight Deck?

Personally, we are not too sad if Flight Deck were to be removed, as we all agreed after riding it that the experience was very rough, and a one and done.

Flight Deck Aerial ©Google

What is also interesting to consider is the area around Flight Deck.

While we have never rode Time Warp ourselves, everything we have heard is it is not the best ride experience. While not the biggest footprint, if Time Warp were to be removed in addition to Flight Deck, there is quite a large area that could be utilized for future attractions.

So if Flight Deck were to be removed, what would you like to see put in its place?

2021 Canadas Wonderland Haunt Camp Spooky Leave a reply

The spookiest season of the year descends upon Canada’s Wonderland this weekend with the opening of Halloween Haunt on Sept. 24 and Camp Spooky for the kids on September 25, 2021. Both events run select dates until October 31 and this year will feature new, immersive outdoor experiences and entertainment for thrill-seekers and families alike.

Now in its 16th season, Haunt returns to Canada’s Wonderland on Friday, September 24 transforming the theme park into a scream park filled with thrilling attractions, unspeakable horror and amazing night rides. Due to Covid-19, indoor mazes have been transformed into new outdoor experiences throughout the parkleaving guests fewer places to hide!

For 2021 Haunt features more live entertainment than ever, with four terrifying shows (Inferno, Skeleton Crew, Freak Show and the Illusionist), a Vampire Disco, roaming performers and live bands. Hundreds of monsters will prowl 10 scare zones, including three new areas.

2021 Canadas Wonderland Haunt

New Haunt attractions include:
• The Skeleton Crew (Live Show): Freshly dead and returned to us from the underworld, The Skeleton Crew brings their humour and horror to Haunt with electrifying acrobatics, trampoline antics and daring feats of athleticism.

• Inferno (Live Show): From the fiery depths of hell comes Inferno, the hottest live show at Halloween Haunt. Watch our fire demons possess (er…captivate) the audience with stunning fire tricks, balancing acts and more.

• The Farmstead (Scare Zone): The haunted horrors of an abandoned slaughterhouse have taken over a nearby farm, where terrible ends await those who dare journey through the dark fields and rusty machinery.

• Kingdom of Carnage (Scare Zone): You find yourself in the middle of a brutal, bloody siege upon a castle ruled by a wicked king. Just as the advancing villagers gain ground, an evil terror is unleashed, threatening to consume everyone and everything in its path.
• Streets of the Undead (Scare Zone): The zombie apocalypse has arrived and the few remaining survivors are desperate to make it through to the Safe Zone. But the undead are closing in on all sides, hungry for human flesh

Halloween Haunt runs select nights Sept. 24 to Oct. 31 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Admission is included with a GOLD pass and reservations are required for all guests. Not recommended for children under 13. Most park rides and attractions will be in operation. Guests are not permitted to attend the event in costume.

2021 Canadas Wonderland Oktoberfest Menu Items Leave a reply

If you have gotten the chance to experience any of the Canadas Wonderland specialty food festivals in years past, you would know they put out some spectacular menu items! We have been to all of them, and the food and beverage items are authentic to the theme of the event and an incredible opportunity to try the food, with often much of it included on the Canadas Wonderland dining plans.

With pandemic restrictions in place, the food festivals we have all come to love are off the table right now (though an epic new food festival is coming to Canadas Wonderland in 2022). However, Canadas Wonderland is taking the time to offer some of the iconic Oktoberfest menu items this year without all the normal Oktoberfest pomp and circumstance. Technically this year marks the fifth year for Oktoberfest at Canadas Wonderland since the park was closed in 2020.

The limited time 2021 Canadas Wonderland Oktoberfest menu will be offered September 11-12 and 18-19, 2021. All options are available at the Marketplace, now renamed the Oktoberfest Haus. There are no tasting cards this year (again, scaled back event), so all menu options are available for individual purchase or as a dining plan option as highlighted below.

Oktoberfest Sausage (served with German potato salad and red cabbage salad)- $12.99 (Dining Plan eligible)
Frankfurter Sausage (served with German potato salad and red cabbage salad)- $12.99 (Dining Plan eligible)
Turkey Knackwurst Sausage (served with German potato salad and red cabbage salad)- $12.99 (Dining Plan eligible)

Chicken Schnitzel with Spätzle and Red Cabbage Salad- $12.99 (Dining Plan eligible)

Knödel (2 German Potato Dumplings)- $12.99 (Dining Plan eligible)

9 Jumbo Pretzels- $12.99
Bavarian Pretzel
Jalapeno Pretzels
Cheese Pretzels

24” Bavarian Sausage- $19.99

32 oz Beer with Collector Stein- $19.99; Refill $15.99

32 oz Beer with Collector Stein, 24 Sausage, 9 Pretzel Combo- $45.99

Mustard selection: Weißwurst Senf (Bavarian Sweet Mustard), Delikatess Senf (Medium Spicy Mustard), Scharfer Senf (Spicy Mustard)
Condiments: Sauerkraut, Beer Glazed Onions, Grilled-Onion Chowchow, Sauteed Peppers and Onion
Salads: German Potato Salad, Rotkohlsalat mit Räucherkäse (Red Cabbage Salad with Bavarian Smoked Cheese)
