NAMIBIA The Namib desert, stretching 81 000 km² along Namibia’s Atlantic coastline, is a major drawcard among the estimated 1 million tourists who visit the nation annually. According to NASA, the desert features some of the world’s highest sand dunes, rising to at least 300m above the desert floor.

"> SOUTH AFRICA While perhaps not as well-known as South Africa’s more commercial tourist destinations, the rugged and unspoilt beauty of the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast is renowned, and continues to attract tourists from both in-country and beyond. The Eastern Cape is also the birthplace of Nelson Mandela.

"> NAMIBIA Just outside Keetmanshoop in Namibia’s Namib desert is the Quiver Tree Forest – a national monument that’s home to around 250 specimens of aloe dichotoma, some of which have been around for centuries. Traditionally, San people would use its branches to make quivers, hence its name.

"> ETHIOPIA Addis Ababa’s Holy Trinity Cathedral was constructed to commemorate Ethiopian liberation from Italian occupation. This highly esteemed place of worship is the final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie, whose Aksumite-style granite tomb stands alongside that of his wife’s.

It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea by European explorers, and became infamous in the 17th century as a depot where slaves were bartered.

"> RWANDA Having been at risk of extinction due to uncontrolled hunting, war and destruction of its forest habitat, conservation efforts have seen mountain gorilla numbers grow. Many live in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, which was a base for the zoologist Dian Fossey.
