Utah Beef Improvement Association Holds 49th Annual Performance Bull Test Sale

The members of the Utah Beef Improvement Association (UBIA) held their annual Performance Bull Test Sale on March 20, 2021. This year’s sale represented the top bulls in the class of the 49th annual performance bull test which concluded in February at Cedar Ridge Farms’ feedlot (formerly Kenisons Feedlot) in Levan, Utah.

Eighty-nine bulls from eight breeds and divisions were sold by this year’s 40 participating seedstock operations. The buyers seemed to be seeing red this year as a Hereford and Red Angus tied to top the sale $4,750 each. The Hereford offered by Doug Hall Family Herefords from Fruita, Colorado, was purchased by Randle Dye of Wales, Utah. The Red Angus was offered by Lyle Taylor of Vernal, Utah and went to Wood Cattle Co. from Minersville, Utah. Lyle is the only founding member of the UBIA still with us, so this was fitting for his bull to top this year’s sale.

The other top-selling bulls in this year’s sale were the following:

Top Gelbvieh was offered by Sonlight Ranch of LaGrande, Oregon and sold to TN Ranching of Price, Utah for $4,100.

Top Black Angus in the Growth division were sold by McPherson Farms (Nephi, Utah) and Mountain Valley Angus (Neola, Utah) to Mack Morrell of Bicknell, Utah and Quinn Smith of ShowLow, Arizona, respectively. They sold for $4,500 each.

Top Black Angus in the Low Birth Weight division were sold by Bear Canyon Angus (American Fork, Utah) and Westwood Angus (Antimony, Utah) to Hogan Brothers, Inc. (South Rim, Utah) and Robert Holt Farms (Enterprise, Utah), respectively. They sold for $4,000 each.

Top Simmental was sold by Double E Simmentals of Vernal, Utah to Jeff Horrocks of Neola, Utah for $3,750.

Among the composite bulls, the top Sim-Angus bull offered by Top Hat Simmentals from Deweyville, Utah was sold to Three L Farms from Payson, Utah for $4,500. The top Balancer bull offered by Pace Ranch in Torrey, Utah was sold to Hogan Brothers, Inc. of South Rim, Utah for $3,100.

New to the sale this year were some lots of heifers and pairs offered for sale after the bulls had sold. This year’s top-selling pen of heifers were three Red Angus heifers consigned by Bastian Red Angus from Neola, Utah and sold to Dave Hansen of Fairview, Utah for $3,400 each.
