The Friends of the Kansas City Public Library is volunteer organization dedicated to championing the Kansas City Public Library and its mission to serve as a doorway to knowledge for all people in our community. When you become a Friend, you join a diverse, dynamic group committed to supporting, advocating for, and sharing in the experiences that make our library unique.
The Friends started in 1984 to advocate for a bond issue, which led to the Library's separation from the Kansas City School district and allowed for the branches to be built. That year the Friends also hosted their very first book sale, and in its first 25 years the Friends donated thousands of volunteer hours and over $1,000,000 in monetary gifts.
