Die Deutsche Abteilung der IAP wurde 1964 auf Initiative des damaligen Bonner Ordinarius für Pathologie, Prof. Dr. Herwig Hamperl, und 19 deutscher Pathologen gegründet.Die Internationale Dachorganisation, die von amerikanischen und kanadischen Pathologen bereits 1906 gegründet worden war, und zunächst International Association of Medical Museums (gemeint sind anatomische und pathologisch-anatomische Sammlungen) und erst 1955 International Academy of Pathology genannt wurde, begründet in ihren Statuten ebenfalls diese Aufgaben.Die Notwendigkeit der Gründung einer Deutschen Abteilung (Division) der IAP fand ihre Bestätigung in der Tatsache, daß inzwischen nahezu alle deutschen Pathologen d.h.
