GRANT, HUMPHREY, CUNNINGHAM WINNERS IN GEORGE SCALESThe tropical depression may have  brought a bunch of rain to Ocala but it didn t dampen the competitive spirit of those who played in the George Scales Memorial tournament. With the steady persistent rain that came down at the Country Club at Silver Spring Shores during the final round, Justin Grant, Steve Humphrey and Rob Cunningham won their respective divisions.Playing in the Open Division, Grant (Tampa) fired an even-par 72 in the last round to go with his opening round of 69 and a 141 total. Grant s 141 score was one better than  Matt Giovannelli who posted a 142 (72-70). Finishing third was Kelly Gosse at 144 (70-74). Tied for fourth at 145 were Colton Godwin (73-74) and Martin Musgrave (68-77) and Sam Rodgers (71-74).Humphrey was the only Senior Division player to be under par. Humphrey shot 143 on rounds of 70-73. Finishing second was Doug Snoap (Apopka) with 74-72 146. Tied for third at 148 were Ken Godwin (74-74) and Chris Berhnard (Inverness) 75-73.Orlando s Robert Cunningham shot the low round of the day, a 4-under-par 68 to capture the Super Senior title. Cunningham s 142 total was one better than runner-up Randy Briggs (72-71 143) Finishing in third was Berger Warner at 144 (73-71).ALBRIGHT MEDALIST AT MARION MASTERS QUALIFIEROn a day full of low scores at the Marion Masters Qualifier held at the Country Club at Silver Springs Shores, Gray Albright took medalist honors with a seven-under 65. Albright will be looking to be the third member of his family to take home the trophy at the Marion Masters joining his brother, Miles (2019), and his father, Steve (1996, 2008, 2012, 2013).Behind Albright were Daniel Meadows and Daniel Adkins, who both fired six-under 66s to take a tie for second. Rounding out the top finishers were Martin Musgrave (68), Jeff Morley (69), and Paul Irvin (69).The Marion Masters will be held June 19-21 at Stone Creek, the Country Club of Ocala, and Ocala Golf Club.Congrats to all qualifiers and we look forward to seeing everyone in a few short weeks!BROWN, FRITZ, GRADY, PFROGNER MOOT THOMAS INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSBrian Brown, John Fritz, Tom Grady and Jim Pfrogner fought off challenges  by some of the top senior amateur golfers in the country to win their divisions in the Moot Thomas Invitational over the weekend at the Ocala Golf Club.Heading into the final round Brown (Inverness) trailed the leader of the Senior Division by three shots. Brown s final round 2-under-par 70 enabled him to go past the leaders and edge out Orlando s Robert Parker by one shot 213 to 214. Parker finished second. Randy Haag (CA) finished tied for third with Steve Humphrey (Odala) at 215. Fifth place went to Mike Murphy (Oldsman) with a score of 216.In the Super Senior Division John Fritz was also a come-from-behind winner. Fritz (NC)  shot a 4-under-par 68 to win the division. His 214 total was one better than Tim Vigolsky (Palm City) who finished at 215. Third place went to Doug Harris (TN) posting a 216 score. Tied for fourth place were Kevin Macy (Tampa) and Robert Parmar (AL) with 219 totals.In the Legends Division Tom Grady (Lakewood Ranch) edged Berger Warner (Ocala) by one shot. Both players shot identical 3-under-par 69 s on the last day giving them 215 and 216 respectively. Mike Jackson (GA) finished third with a 218 total. Fourth place went to George Washburn(MD) at 219  with Frank Perry (GA) coming in fifth at 220.It was not a close contest in the Super Legends Division as Jim Pfrogner (Sarasota) won by 12 shots. Pfrogner shot the low round of the day, a 5-under-par 67 which gave him a 213 total. Finishing second was Charlie Busbee (GA) with a 225 score. Third place went to Ron Russo (Ocala) with a 227. In fourth place was Brian Sachs (Newberry) with a 230 score. Joe Pavoni (KY) finished fifth with a 231.CHIP SHOTS This was the second Moot Thomas Title for Brown, having won previously in 2014. The win for Pfrogner was also his second Super Legends title having won in 2019.For the final scores for the entire field see Tournament Information/Results/Final Results Moot Thomas Invitational.VANNUCCI, OWEN, WARNER WINNERS AT CCO INVITATIONALTroy Vannucci, Daniel Owen, and Berger Warner were division winners at the Country Club of Ocala Invitational.Vannucci won the Championship Division after following his first round 71 with a second round 68 and 139 total, just enough to hold off red-hot Matt Epperson who fired the low round of the tournament with a 66 on Sunday. Also in the hunt were Steve Albright (71-73), Matt Giovannelli (73-72), and Seth Wright (75-70).In the Legends Division, Daniel Owen ran away from the field after posting a second round 68 and 138 total. Owen’s 6-under par weekend put him seven ahead of second place finisher Brian Brown (75-70). Rounding out the top 5 were Steve Humphrey (74-74), Mike Murphy (78-70), and Richard Weber (75-76).It took extra holes to decide the Hall of Fame Division after Berger Warner (73-68) and Frank Puckett (71-70) tied at 141. Warner ultimately emerged victorious after beating the first-round leader Puckett in a one-hole playoff. Kevin Macy (72-71), Andy Padova (77-72), and Rick Powers (77-75) all had solid finishes as well.For full results, see Tournament Information / Results.HUMPHREY, AUDI WINNERS AT MARION MASTERS SENIORSSteve Humphrey took his first Marion Masters Seniors title after following his first round 68 with a Sunday 67 at Ocala Golf Club.Humphrey s 135 total was enough to hold off Jeff Morley (69-69) and Jeff Faulker (73-65), who had the low round of the tournament on Sunday with a 7-under 65. Rounding out the top 5 were Daniel Owen (70-70) and Dick McDonough (68-73).In the Legends Division, Ron Audi followed his level par 72 with a 78 to win over Greg Mirabile (79-78) and Frank Angelino (79-78).For all the final scores, see Tournament Information / Results / Marion Masters Seniors Final Results.HILL, OWEN, McDONOUGH WINNERS AT THE MEMORIALJeff Hill, Daniel Owen, and Dick McDonough each won their respective divisions at The Memorial Invitational.On a surprisingly rainless day at the Country Club of Ocala, Jeff Hill followed his first-round 72 with a one over par 73 to take the Open Division title by two strokes over Bill Searcy (75-72) and Colton Godwin (78-69). In fourth place was Drew Ditty with rounds of 76-75.In the Senior Division, Daniel Owen turned in the round of the day with a 5-under 67 to go along with his opening round 73, winning by six over Kenny Godwin. Godwin, the overnight leader after opening with 71, followed with a 75 and a 146 total. The Albrights opened the 2-day tournament with an 11-under-par 61 and came back on day two with a six-under-par 66 giving them a 17-under-127 and a two-shot win. Finishing  in second were Dennis McArthur(Tallahassee) and Matt Johnson (Tallahassee) with a 65-65 129. Third place went to Brian Brown (Inverness) and Kelly Gosse (Crystal River) with a 13-under-par 131. Fourth place went to Steve Albright and Jimmy Letterly with an 11-under-par 133 (65-66).It was a close race in  the Senior Division. Steve Humphrey  paired with Bob Levy (The Villages) to sneak by Richard Weber/ Pete Giullette and Ian Clarke/Dan Ogen by one shot. Humphrey/Levy shot 69-67 136, Weber/Giullette posted 72-65 137 and Clarke/Ogen shot 69-68 137.Roger Karsnitz and Mark Plummer broke away from the pack in the Super Senior Division when they posted an 8-under-par final round of 64. Their 14-under-par 131 total was three better than runners-up Mike Arminio and Daryll Case (67-67 134). Denis Monzon and Dick McDonough finished third with a 138 (69-69). The Golfer of the Year recipient grabbed the lead after the first tournament of the year and never looked back. The Senior Golfer of the Year was the closest competition ever and wasn t decided until the last tournament of the year.Jay King won The Memorial giving him the lead for the Golfer of the Year and he kept the pedal-to-the-medal all year never relinquishing the lead. . King s 13575 points were almost double that  of second place finisher and defending title holder Jeff Hill (6950). Finishing in third was Matt Giovannelli with 6150, fourth was Daniel Owen with 5300 and fifth was Brendan Ehlers with 5100 points.The Senior Golfer of the Year went down to the last tournament of the competition and the winner was decided by the slimmest of margins since the award s inception. Steve Humphrey won the year-ending Golf Central Cup which allowed him to go from fourth place to first. Humphrey amassed 11050 points which edged runner-up Jeff Morley by a mere 75 points. Morley tied for second place in the GC Cup. Finishing third was Ken Godwin with 10750 points.  Fourth place went to Dan Ogen (10750) with Bobby Bryant fifth at 7450 points.OUT OF THE ROUGH Ehlers and Morley with their finishes in the tournament won exemptions into the 2020 Marion Masters tournament. King and Godwin were the only players in their respective division to get points in all of the designated point events.For the final Golfer and Senior of the Years standings see Golfer of the Year and Senior Golfer of the Year Standings.MCGA Chairman Ron Russo congratulates Steve Humphrey the Senior Golfer of the YearEHLERS AND HUMPHREY GOLF CENTRAL CUP WINNERSBrendan Ehlers and Steve Humphrey won their respective divisions in the inaugural Golf Central Cup.Both players shot 69 at Ocala Golf Club. the 3-under-par score was good enough for Humphrey to win the Senior Division but Ehler s 69 put him in a tie for first with Matt Giovannelli for the Open Division title.Ehlers and Giovanelli went to sudden death playoff to decide the winner. Both players nearly birdied the first playoff hole and then exchanged pars on the second playoff hole. On the third extra hole Ehlers knocked his second shot into the cup for an eagle and the title.Rounding out the top five in the Open Division were Travis Wilemon (72), Hunter Ditty (73) and Jay King, Austin Kirpatrick, Tim Hunt (75).Humphrey s 69 was two shots better than runners-up Jeff Morley and Ian Clarke with 1-under-par 71 s. Finishing fourth was Dave Falcone with a 74 and Mike Kemp was fifth with a 75.With the win Humphrey, who was in third place for Senior Golfer of the Year honors, garnished 3000 points which jumped him into first place edging out Morley by a slim 75 points for the year.For all the scores and the prizes see Tournament Information/Results/GOLF CENTRAL CUP RESULTSOcala Golf Club s Director of Golf presents Brendan Ehler with a Golf Central Cup trophyOWEN AND MACY WINNERS IN DOUG OSWALD INVITATIONALDaniel Owen and Kevin Macy shot identical scores on their way to winning their divisions in the Doug Oswald Invitational.The final round, which was played at Ocala Golf Club, had Owen shooting a 6-under-par 66 giving him an 8-under-par 2-day 136 total to capture the Senior Division title. Second place went to defending champion Steve Humphrey who shot a pair of 69 s for a 6-under-par 138. Third place was won by Jeff Morley with 139 (68-71). There was a three-way tie for fourth place with Brian Brown (Inverness), Doug Snoap (Mt. Dora) and Walter Himelsbaugh (Leesburg) all shooting 2-under-par 144 s.The Super Senior title went to Macy (Leesburg) who posted the same 8-under-par 136 score as Owen which also gave him a two shot win. Finishing in second place was Dick Clemens (Tampa) with a 69-69 138 total. Rob Hess (Casselberry) (72-68) and Pete Andrews  (71-69) tied for third with 140 totals. Robert Schmidt finished fifth with 143 (72-71).Senior Division Flight winners were:  Flight B   Robert Parker (Orlando) (145), Flight C Kelly Gosse (Crystal River) (148), Flight D John McLeod (150), Flight E David Mears (153) and Flight F Duncan Wright (157).Super Senior Flight winners were: Second Flight Bo Craig (143), Third Flight Kevin Hyman (150), Fourth Flight Jon Hill (158) and Fifth Flight Mack Gadd (173).CHIP SHOTS This was the 44th Doug Oswald Invitational tournament which is the oldest Senior Invitational in the state of Florida.Entire field scores will be posted at a later time.GOLFER OF THE YEAR RACE GOLF CENTRAL CUP OPEN DIVISION TOP 20 SET SENIOR TOP 20 DECIDED AFTER OSWALD INVITATIONALThe Golfer of the Year in the Open Division has been decided as Jay King played in all eight point events and played well in all of them. Even with the year-ending Golf Central tournament to be played King s massive lead will earn him his second Golfer of the Year honor. King came out of the chute quickly by winning the season opening The Memorial. In all King amassed 12525 points which gave him the championship. In his eight tournaments King had one win, five top-fives, a sixth and 10th place finish. King heads into the year-ending Golf Central Cup as the top seed.  The top 20 finishers in the Open Division qualify for the Golf Central Cup (See current standings).The Senior Golfer of the Year title is still up for grabs as there are two tournaments left to be played, The Doug Oswald Invitational and the Golf Central Cup. The packed leaderboard has Dan Ogen in the top spot with 9750 points followed by Ken Godwin (2nd) with 9225. Third place is Jeff Morley, Berger Warner fourth and Bill Wright fifth. The top 20 golfers in the standings after the Oswald Invitational will be eligible to play in the Golf Central Cup.The Golf Central Cup is a one-day tournament that is being played at Ocala Club on Sunday, November 24. The top 20 and ties in the Golfer and Senior Golfer of the Year races will be eligible to play in it. (See the latest standings under Golfer of the Year.)McDONOUGH WINS MARION MASTERS SUPER SENIORSIt took overtime to decide the 2019 overall winner of the Marion Masters Super Senior Championship. Dick McDonough, who was the tournament leader after the first round , found himself trailing Berger Warner with one hole left to play at Ocala Palms CC. McDonough knocked his second shot to 10 feet and made the putt to send the match into sudden-death. On the first playoff hole McDonough made a clutch par-saving 8-foot putt to extend the match. On the second hole of the playoff, McDonough s putter once again came through as he rolled in the winning putt. McDonough shot a final round 71 for a 2-day score of 4-under-par 140. Four time MM Super Senior champion, Warner shot the low round of the day, a 3-under-par 69 for his 140 total. Finishing third was Robert Caron with a 145 (73-72), fourth place was Ron Russo at 148 (71-77) and fifth place went to Jerry Rodeheaver at 149 (75-74).Caron won the Super Senior Division (65-69) with Ed Cambias and Bo Craig tying for second with 151 s. Fourth place went to David McLeod at 156 and fifth place was Dan Cole at 157.In the Silver Senior Division (70-74), McDonough and Warner tied for first with Dale Hogsten placing third with 152. Fourth place went to Jon Hill with 156.  Tom Hopkins was fifth with 157.Winning the Golden Senior Division (75+) was Russo with Rodeheaver second. Third place winner was George Gay at 160. The Florida State Golf Team commits shot a 9-under-par 63 only to find themselves in a playoff with Dean Greyserman (Boca Raton) Alan Kornikova (Palm Beach). Albright/Roberts birdied the first hole to win the playoff. Albright/Roberts will head to Philadephia, PA to play in the USGA Championship at The Cricket Club in May of 2020.DANIEL OWEN RUNNER-UP IN FSGA MID-SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPA final round of 4-under-par 68 by Daniel Owen s in the last round of FSGA Mid-Senior Championship put him in a tie the tournament leader Joe Alfieri. With two holes to go in the  54-hole event, Owen found himself trailing the leader by  three shots. Owen birdied 17  and realized he was two behind. Lutz s Alfieri bogeyed the final and Owen rolled in another birdie to knot the two players. Both players shot 9-under-par 207 scores and headed for sudden-death.  During the ensuing  playoff both players exchanged pars on the first hole. On the  par five second hole Owen just missed his birdie putt and Alfieri made his birdie for the win.KING LEADS GOLFER OF THE YEAR GODWIN TAKES LEAD IN SENIOR GOLFER OF THE YEARJay King holds a commanding lead in the MCGA Golfer of the Year race and Ken Godwin took the lead for Senior Golfer of the Year honors.Golfer of the Year has King (11,375)  with a 5325 point lead over Jeff Hill (6050).  Third place belongs to Miles Albright with 4000 points followed by Brent Dorman with 3050 points. Tied for fifth are Jon Houchens and Matt Giovannelli with 3050 points.In the Senior race Godwin has a slight 5o point lead over Dan Ogen. Godwin has 8800 points and Ogen has 8750. Third place is Berger Warner with 6775 followed by Steve Humphrey at 5250. Fifth place is Bill Wright with 4525 points.There is just one more tournament remaining in the Race To Muni (Golf Central Cup) and that is the Bo Williams City Amateur for the Open Division and two events left for the Seniors (Bo Williams and Doug Oswald).Remember the top 20 leaders in each division qualify for year-ending Golf Central Cup in November.The current standings for both Golfer of the Year and Senior Golfer of the Year are under Golfer of the Year.The First Tee provides young people with character-building and life skills lessons using golf as the platform.
