Description:

Impairment due to mental illness, substance use disorders or medical problems are often a treatable problem.Treatment benefits and protects the licensee, the general public and the community. The HPRP aims to protect the public and support the health professional in recovery. Where these interests compete, decisions must be made on the side of protecting public safety first. Participants in the HPRP are assigned a case manager who clarifies, supports and encourages the participant to follow their monitoring agreement. Participants are monitored to ensure compliance with any drug testing, treatment, support groups and documentation specified in the monitoring agreement. Substance Use Disorder 10% of full-time employees in the US work force 18 and older have a substance use disorder. Treatable Conditions Substance use disorders and mental health disorders are treatable conditions. Alternative to Disciplinary Action The program offers an alternative to disciplinary action through the health professional’s licensing board. Confidential The program provides licensed health professionals confidential means to get the assistance they need. Remain Employed The program provides health care facilities the ability to employ and retain highly qualified and skilled professionals while assured an impairment is being treated and monitored effectively. Not Immune Health care professionals are not immune to substance use and/or mental health disorders Do No Harm The program encourages health professionals to seek treatment for substance use and/or mental health disorders before their impairment harms a patient or damages their careers. Long-Term Recovery A monitoring agreement between the HPRP and a health professional supports long-term recovery while ensuring safety to the public. HPRP, I thank you for all the support and requirements set forth in the last 3 years; it has changed my life for the better. I have never felt better or have been more content and accepting of life in general, with all the joys and sadness that comes with it. Sobriety has become the most important aspect of my daily living. Without it, I have nothing. With HPRP’s help I have kept my RN license and am still practicing the career that I have loved for 27 years. I know that many people complain about the effects of the HPRP has on their lives, but I can honestly say that my life has been improved in the last 2 ½ years since starting the HPRP. I used to say, “I thought the party was over once I got sober, but I am now realizing that the party has just begun.” Thank you HPRP for playing a role in my sobriety and giving me the opportunity to learn things about myself that I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t in the HPRP. I am so grateful to the HPRP for providing a way to help health professionals maintain a program of recovery and be able to safely practice our profession. This program and the support that I have found through this program has encouraged me to remain clean and sober for the last 5 years. The State of Michigan’s Health Professionals Recovery Program (HPRP) was established in 1994 by legislation.This program is administered through a contract with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Professional Licensing and is supported by various health professional licensing boards and the associations and societies of the health professions in the State.The HPRP supports the recovery of its participants so they may safely return to practice and protect the safety of the general public.
