Ali Pourkeramati, CEO of Ferroelectric Memory (FMC), has morethan 35 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, most recently asmanaging partner at Influence Capital Partners. He held several different rolesat Spansion and Cypress Semiconductor from 2005 to 2015, including CTO.Ali was founder and CEO of Azalea Microelectronics, anon-volatile flash memory company, from 1995 to 2004. Before that, he was vicepresident of design engineering at ICT. He also held several differentpositions in non-volatile memory design engineering at ICT and Signetics.Ali received his M.Sc. in electrical engineering at SantaClara University and B.Sc. in electrical and computer engineering at OregonState University. He has more than 15 patents in non-volatile memory andrelated subjects.Where do we find you this weekend, Ali?Like many people in these pandemic times, I spend most of mytime sitting at my desk in my home office. This does not stop on the weekend.Communication is especially important to me: That’s why I talk and Zoom a lotwith my colleagues at FMC and, of course, with partners and potentialcustomers.What personal projects will you be working on thisweekend?Even in my spare time, I am very much engaged in technology.Right now, the topic of artificial intelligence is very exciting for me: Thenumerous potential applications are fascinating and I am curious to see how theimplementation will look in reality and what further developments will follow.But of course, I am especially interested in the technical aspects. At themoment, I am looking at different AI processors on the market and am trying tounderstand their variety.What’s your favorite way to consume industry news?It is very important for me to always be up to date.Throughout the day, I repeatedly read news on the web. This way, I getimportant news immediately and stay well-informed. Audio news also plays animportant role in my everyday life. And even if they are no longer quite asimportant, news on paper remains an integral part of everyday life.Who was your mentor?There is no one person I would call my mentor. To be and tostay successful, you have to keep learning from other people. In this way,everyone in the industry was and is my mentor, regardless of whether I workwith them directly or indirectly.Of course, there are always a few people who stand out. Butthat changes in the course of time. At the moment, for example, I would say:Jimmy Lee [former CEO and chairman of ISSI], Steve Sanghi [CEO of Microchip],John Kispert [former CEO of Spansion], and more.What advice would you give to people wanting tostart a company in the current climate?The first step is to come up with a new idea. You have tobelieve your idea is the right one for the market and it will change or improvethe world around us.
