Description:

The Center for Public Health Genomics (CPHG) addresses questions in public health, biology and medicine by developing and applying state-of-the-art genetic, genomic and computational approaches to human data and samples and manipulation of model organisms.CPHG is focused on translational and personalized medicine — moving gene discovery (and the manner in which genes interact with environment) into the delivery of health care and of disease prevention both in clinical settings as well as in the community. Our research projects range from gene discovery to pharmacogenomics to mouse models of human disease. Graduate research in the CPHG is based in programs through colleges (including the School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences) within existing graduate programs. The Future Public health genomics is a multi-disciplinary field that focuses on the effective and responsible translation of genetic information and technology for the benefit of population health. A major focus of our work translates genomic discoveries to appropriate population level assessments, policies and disease prevention programs. Learn More Center for Public Health Genomics Education Graduate students identify CPHG mentors and conduct research in CPHG faculty laboratories. This research leads to degrees in disciplines that are typically multidisciplinary. Read More UVA Seminar Series The Center for Public Health Genomics operates two seminar series in Fall and Spring semesters: the weekly Genome Sciences Seminar Series (GS3), and the semi-monthly CPHG Research in Progress (CPHG-RIP). Current Schedule Researchers seeking to better understand how our genes contribute to stroke risk have completed what is believed to be the largest and most comprehensive review of the human genome to identify genes that predispose people to ischemic stroke, the cause of approximately 85 percent of all strokes. Learn More Civelek Lab Among the First Class of UVA Certified Green Labs, 2019 UVA Green Labs Certification is an adaptable program that allows researchers the freedom to introduce changes at their individual pace while tailoring action items to their specific processes. This year, CPHG s Civelek Lab Member Finds Her Passion University of Virginia biomedical engineering student is trying to tackle the world’s No. 1 cause of death on a genetic level. Rita Anane-Wae, from Ghana by way of Glendale, Arizona, Major Asian Gene Study to Help Doctors Understand, Treat Disease An ambitious new study of genes in Asian populations is filling in big gaps in our understanding of human genetics, shedding light on the history of human migration and ultimately Moving on Up! Congratulations to Ani Manichaikul, PhD for her promotion to Associate Professor and Charles Farber, PhD on earning tenure! Both Ani and Charles are resident faculty in the Center for Public CPHG s Josyf Mychaleckyj Appointed Assistant Dean for Biomedical Data Sciences On July 22, 2019, UVA School of Medicine's Senior Associate Dean for Research, Margaret A. Shupnik, PhD, announced the appointment of Josyf Mychaleckyj, MA, PhD, as Assistant Dean for Biomedical Multi-Ancestry Genome-Wide Association Study of Lipid Levels Incorporating Gene-Alcohol Interactions.
