I heartily commend this excellent account by Dr Tim Grass of my former senior missionaries and colleagues Ernest and Gertrude Trenchard. Their love for the Spanish people and culture and their dedication to the spread of the gospel made a significant and lasting impact on several generations of evangelicals, which has spread to other Spanish-speaking countries through Ernest s many published works. Terry Wickham, who joined the Trenchards in 1958 and continues with others to develop their work through Bible teaching and publications. The British Brethren missionaries Ernest and May Trenchard devoted their lives to serving the Church in Spain, planting congregations and forming leaders at a time when much activity in evangelism, teaching, and publishing had to be undertaken clandestinely. Such service came at significant personal cost, and this book explores what it meant to minister in such a context. At a period when it was claimed that Protestantism was merely a foreign import, the Trenchards sought to immerse themselves in local culture so that Brethren congregations would emerge whose ethos was genuinely Spanish.
