CANDIDATE FOR LAKE TRAVIS ISD SCHOOL BOARD - PLACE 4 About Me: Our oldest was just a baby when my wife Chandra and I moved to the Lake Travis school district in 1999. Keaton was 10 months old; I have pictures of her playing in the moving boxes. She graduated from The University of Texas in May of 2021. She is now teaching 5th grade science and loving it! She is a teacher! We could not be more proud that she decided to take on one of the most noble professions. My grandmother taught for almost 40 years and I know she is looking down on her great granddaughter with pride and admiration. Our family has grown to four children, with Jackson a junior studying Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University; Connor a junior at LTHS; and Mia a sophomore at LTHS. All four of our kids will be LTISD “Lifers”! We wouldn’t have it any other way. We love this community and it gives me great pleasure to be able to give back by serving our community and our district as School Board Trustee. My name is John Aoueille (owl-yay) and I have been on the Lake Travis ISD School Board since July of 2015. I am extremely proud of the fact that this past year I was unanimously voted as President by my six school board peers. It has been an absolute honor to humbly serve our school board members, Superintendent and district in this leadership role. It is no surprise that this year has brought many new challenges to every school district in our nation. We made some difficult decisions and yet, I do not regret one decision our board made during these difficult times. My Priorities: Closing Academic Gaps Remote schooling did not work for the vast majority of students. The entire nation is dealing with students that are behind where they should be. In Lake Travis, in addition to gaps created by our short stint of remote learning, we also have the challenge of many students moving from various states that were learning remotely far longer and were involved in different curriculums. We cannot attain academic excellence without closing those gaps. My number one priority is for our district to assess each and every student to help our teachers understand where we can best provide extra help for each student. The state of Texas has appropriated funds for programs and extra teachers to help our students get back on track. These added funds are crucial because LTISD, along with every other district in Texas, will need additional staff to work with students that are not on level. Right now, our district leaders are creating plans to assess and help each student overcome learning gaps. College Readiness, Workforce Preparedness and Academic Excellence As a father of young adults, college and workforce preparedness is something I am committed to for all our students. One of the largest unknowns seniors are facing today is college admittance to their university of choice. The college entrance landscape has changed dramatically in the last two years. More and more colleges are looking at students with a holistic approach. Yes, SAT’s and ACT’s are important, but our kids at LT are admitted into the colleges they choose because great opportunities help create well-rounded students. They are better prepared because they are challenged and involved in the wonderful school programs and extracurricular activities LT offers. College readiness does not begin in high school. It begins on the first day each student enrolls in our district, from preschool to high school. We are LT and it shows. We had 70 Merit Scholars this past year, the most in our school’s history. It is truly amazing and humbling to think what these kids have gone through the last two years and they still achieve to such a high degree. Community Engagement LT is a special place. People realize it and that is why we have seen so much growth in our district. The last two years we have seen a substantial rise in community engagement at our school board meetings - and I think it is great! We love to hear from parents, staff, and concerned community members. We are stronger when we have open dialogue and robust community engagement. As a parent, I know nothing is more important than our kids and I appreciate the parents who take the time to advocate for their children. Our families are the heart of our district and differing perspectives are important as we continue to address the opportunities and issues facing our school district. I encourage parents to attend our school board meetings and engage in the different committees that have been created for community input and feedback. I promise to listen to the ideas, recommendations, and concerns of our community, and continue to make decisions that are best for our students and staff. Highlights of School Board Trustee Service: • We have consistently voted to increase staff pay and provide bonuses in LTISD. • We raised the hourly rate for substitute teachers. • We added additional social workers and counselors to the district to better care for the mental health of our students. • I voted to allow seniors and LTISD students to have their final week of school with masks optional in May 2021. Having an in-person graduation ceremony and seeing those seniors smiling brought so much joy to this community. • I supported returning to school in-person in August 2021. This decision allowed our students to begin the recovery process from the pandemic much more quickly. Having kids in school for learning is crucial to their academic success and for their mental and emotional health. • I was unanimously voted School Board Trustee President by my six school board peers for the 2021-2022 school year. • I was on the 2011 Bond Advisory Committee that recommended bond funds to build new schools, refurbish older schools, and bolster technology throughout the district. From these decisions we were able to build Lake Travis Middle School, West Cypress Elementary School, Bee Cave Middle School, and Rough Hollow Elementary School. • I was also on the 2013 committee that proposed new school boundaries to the school board. The committee had to study the data and predict the future growth while maintaining school numbers in existing schools- a tough job because almost every student and family was impacted. Through this process we were able to successfully rezone our district to efficiently use our existing campuses. • I aided the district in passing the TRE two-penny swap in 2017 and again in 2021. This moves two cents from the I&S (Interest and Sinking) side of the school district funds and moves them to the M&O (Maintenance and Operations) side. This simple, no-cost measure added about $2 million to district finances in 2017 and about $3 million to the district in 2021. These funds stay home - 100% of those funds are NOT eligible for recapture, commonly known as “Robin Hood”. The legislature has allowed TRE’s for school districts to offset the Tax Compression (tax rate decreases) that began in 2017. • We created the Lake Travis Police Department to make our schools safer and provide cost-savings to the district in the years to come. Community Involvement: • I served on the Lake Travis Education Foundation for four years, including one year as president. I met many great friends while serving alongside so many others. I have nothing but fond memories of serving on this great Foundation and would recommend that every parent volunteer to serve on the LT Education Foundation. • I was chosen to be a part of the Class Project that LTISD offers to community members that want to learn more about how school districts operate. • With four kids, I have been involved with LTYA youth sports for many years. In fact, I have coached so many games for my kids while they were in LTYA that I have no idea what that number would be…I wish I could coach one more. I loved almost every minute of it!
