Through February 7, 2021In Sanskrit poetry, people and elephants live harmoniously in a shared natural world, where elephants enhance the aesthetic pleasure of the landscape by augmenting almost all of the human senses. Inspired by this inherent reverence for the elephant, an appreciation rooted in India’s rich literary traditions and folklore, artists at the courts of Muslim and Hindu rulers produced splendid paintings and studies of elephants, many of which were admired in albums, and others conceived as independent compositions or as designs for transfer to other media. Through April 18, 2021Contemporary artist Cauleen Smith creates a new work of art–a video that premieres at the San Diego Museum of Art that is inspired by one of the most important works in the Museum’s collection, Juan Sánchez Cotán’s Still Life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber (ca. 1602). Through January 3, 2021The Museum shares the extraordinary artistic accomplishment of 17th-century painters and printmakers from the Dutch Republic. The exhibition, Rembrandt and Printmaking in the Netherlands, includes approximately 20 etchings and engravings by Rembrandt. Through March 7, 2021Acclaimed photographer Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) brought a team of assistants and a large-format Polaroid camera to Twinsburg, Ohio, for the annual Twins Days Festival over the summers of 2001 and 2002. The resulting series of extraordinary portraits captures, in astounding detail and clarity, the fascinating physical similarity of identical twins. Just as engaging are the subtle differences between each pair, confirming each twin’s individuality. Amid a range of anecdotes and confessed frustrations, the intense bond shared between these special siblings is further illuminated in their personal statements. Opening November 14, 2020, at noonEmphasizing iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th century to the present, this exhibition presents a broad sampling from the substantial holdings of local collectors Cam and Wanda Garner. This group of pictures, diverse in subject, style, photographic medium, and chronology, presents an occasion to reflect on photography’s role in history and society, and to consider its future trajectory.
