Coach Walker moved to Austin in 1960 and began teaching algebra at the old AHS campus. During his tenure he also coached football, baseball and was the head basketball coach when he left AHS to join the AISD administration. Click here for current obituary Remembering Jacquelyn McGee Dr. Jacquelyn Ann McGee, 1946 graduate and retired principal of Stephen F. Austin High School, died Tuesday, June 2, 2020.Ms. McGee began at AHS as a teacher of English then in 1974 was appointed principal of the newly constructed Austin High School. She became the first woman in the state of Texas to serve as principal of a high school in a major urban center and led the school when it was recognized as on of only forty outstanding high school in the United States. Along with recognition by many national associations, the AHS students and faculty further honored her by naming their new performance facility The Jacquelyn McGee Performing Arts Center. Thank to those of you who donated to the Alumni fund your donations provide funding for the AHS Archives and other special projects that provide excellence at AHS. Remember the very careful measurements in the spring for our new red jackets — then when they were delivered in the fall right before the first game some of us— not me — who were more “ generously endowed” couldn’t button the top button? Remember wearing white socks over our hands when some folks forgot their gloves for the governor’s parade down Congress? Dancing at the Continental Club on South Congress?) And I’m sure most of us have neat “after graduation” stories — was anyone in NYC  or at the Pentagon on 911??Be a part of this vibrant body of alumni, if you don t have an account, register here:  https://www.loyalforever.com/wp-login.php?action=registerAnd if you would like to share a story, send it to me and I ll post it online As we move forward into 2020 we want to remember our classmates who died in 2019. Long-time Austin High School World Geography teacher and social studies department chairperson, Alice Marshall Davis passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2019. After retiring she remained involved in the AHS community through the AHS Contributing Scholarship Foundation and the Assistance League of Austin. She was also a loyal supporter of the AHS Hall of Honor. $26,000. Thirteen deserving Maroons who’ve received much-needed funds to continue their education beyond the halls of Austin High. Almost 50 years since their graduation from AHS, members of the Class of 1970 regularly and generously give to Stephen F. Austin High School Continuing Education Foundation (AHSCEF), funding scholarships for seniors who need financial assistance to go to to college or trade school. AHSCEF thanks these alums for their continued support, with special kudos to Kevin Maguire, the Foundation’s board member who spearheads the donation drive for the class. Among the thirteen scholarships, at least four have been given in honor of deceased members of AHS ’70. Griff Andrews, Cathy Scott McElroy, Ivan Leshikar, and Brad Boring have been lovingly remembered by their classmates. By way of background, as you may know, each year friends and family of Hayden Bowers meet to celebrate his memory at the Hayden Bowers Classic flag football tournament. Recently, a number of us have discussed our desire to honor him in a more permanent way. While the tournament is certainly a meaningful and fun event we hope to continue, we want to honor his life and empower our memories of him long after our legs give out. In conjunction with his Ten-Year High School Reunion, and with the support of the Bowers family, we have finally made this a reality. It is with this background, honor, and excitement that we get to announce our partnership with Austin Community Foundation in forming the Hayden Bowers Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Hayden Bowers Memorial Scholarship Fund is created to honor the memory of Hayden Bowers, and to help future Maroons pursue their dreams. As a 2008 graduate of S.F. Austin High, Hayden was an exemplary student-athlete in multiple sports, as well as a well-respected member of the community.  A leader, on and off the field, Hayden displayed great character and left a lasting impact on all who knew him.  This is an annual scholarship that will be awarded to a graduating student-athlete from S.F. Austin High who has displayed exceptional community leadership and citizenship. Upcoming Goals:Raise $100,000 to create an endowment fund awarding $4,000 in annual scholarships to Austin High student-athletes in perpetuity. Select a 2019 graduating Maroon for the first ever Hayden Bowers Memorial Scholarship.  An Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from the Bowers family and Austin High s faculty and athletic department, will utilize pre-set scholarship criteria to review and select scholarship candidates. Please join us in honoring the memory of our great friend Hayden Bowers by making a contribution to this scholarship fund. Your donation will provide meaningful support for future generations of Austin High Maroons.
