Lee Bay, North Devon.Incorporating Lee and LincombeSituated in a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The geological position of Lee, places it some 2 Miles to the West of Ilfracombe. Bordered on three sides by rolling Devonshire countryside and on the fourth by the Bristol channel.

The picturesque village, which enjoys a maritime climate, is situated in a deep combe, heavily wooded in places. It is very easy to imagine how a small community would have evolved and flourished in such a natural sheltered haven, gleaning a living from the land and sea. Lee is often referred to locally as “Fuchsia Valley” during the flowering season, many of the village hedgerows are ablaze with the scarlet flowers.

Lee and Lincombe supports some one hundred and ten properties of varied construction, ranging from traditional thatched cottages to others of more modern construction. One could safely say that the hub of Lee village is centered around St Matthews Church, Built in 1835. Adjoining the Church is The Old Schoolroom now a Craft Gallery. Opposite the church stands the Village Hall and Pixie Meadow, the sighting of many a Village Fete in bygone years and present times.

Walking in the direction of the sea will be found the the Grampus, our one and only local public house which is well worth a visit, no more so than on a hot summers day. Continuing on the narrow path that run alongside the Grampus and over a small bridge, the path continues through a meadow and eventually arrives at the bay.

The small rocky cove, with its imposing coastline on either side, is regarded by some. as the jewel in the crown of Lee. It is a refreshing change to find such a spot, that has, as yet, remained untouched by the hand of time. At low water even in the height of the summer it remains a tranquil spot with its many rock pools and small sandy beach.

For the more energetic, a multitude of splendid, contrasting, local walks stem from Lee village. Most are well signposted and vary in type and length. This could be considered as one of the most rewarding ways of experiencing the natural outstanding beauty of the area. Whatever the season or whatever the weather, we sincerely hope that you will enjoy your visit to our village.
