Silver Springs Blvd. Ocala, FL 34470 (352)732-4085 September 2020 A Message from President Darla Goldberg Happy October everyone! Fall is such a glorious time of year. Riotous colors, cooler air and holiday plans. While Florida may not have red and gold maple trees we can still revel in the change of the seasons. As our club members continue to weather the Covid restrictions I would like to encourage everyone to nurture your inner artist. Schedule time to sketch, paint, read or watch a good instructional video. It may seem like with staying home so much one could just pick up a brush any old time but, somehow it may just never happen. Consider scheduling a specific time for your creative pursuits. You deserve this personal time. And what better way to lift your spirits than getting in the zone and losing yourself in the magic...your magic! I would like to give a big thank you to our board members and other volunteers. Your continued support and participation are truly appreciated! I also want to send a big thank you to Rosalie Haynes, our bag lady . She has faithfully provided the self seal bags to protect our art work for many years. She is moving, so unfortunately cannot continue to do this for us. But, thank you Rosalie for a job well done! The CWS board is keeping informed of the Covid restrictions. Our members safety and peace of mind continues to be a top priority. Happy Autumn everyone! Darla GoldbergVolunteer Needed!!!! Rosalie Haynes is moving and retiring from her long-held position as our Bag Lady . Thank you, Rosalie for providing us with clear bags for our paintings and cards. We need someone to step up and volunteer for this position as soon as possible, and to get the supplies from Rosalie. An Artist Project - Cleaning House I am sorry to say that the October meeting of the Citrus Watercolor Society has been cancelled again. The threat of the COVID-19 virus is still haunting us. We will miss the great program of “Show and Tell”. My wife decided that, as our last move was nearly 25 years ago, that we should probably take stock of some of the useless things that we have accumulated, and clean house. I thought that I should, in a spirit of cooperation, take a look at my artwork closets - I have two – where I could perhaps find two or three things to discard from that area. So, I started on closet number one located in my office. Believe me I am not a hoarder! However, I was stunned to suddenly realize that this was going to be more than a one-day project. First of all, materials had massed to the extent that upon opening the door things suddenly made their way out. On day number one I found a few things did not relate to my artwork, such as six boxes of photos (several hundred) taken over the years. We reviewed them all and most went into the dumper. Only a small box of photos remained. Now I could get to work on the issues related to my artwork. First was a review of one hundred or more pencil sketches and transfer sheets that had to go – leaving a few that I had never got to paint. Then there were 50 or 60 ribbons hanging that were won at various shows entered all over the State of Florida – I will probably keep those – good for the ego! On to day two. Now we are into the hard core, useful materials. Where did all this stuff come from? A 30-foot roll of Arches 140 lb. cold pressed watercolor paper, and an unopened carton 140 lb. Arches paper. A box of 50 odd tubes of watercolor paints of different colors. Clayboard of several sizes, unused AquaBoard, several small packets of 140 lb. watercolor paper (various brands). Wait there is more! An unused Tom Jones palette. A painting that I must have lost track of and never finished. That is my next painting project. And get this – an unopened complete artist supply set, with brushes, watercolor paint and pencils, a set of oil paints, a set of gouache paints and a set of inks. Now to day three. It seems like lots of matboard mostly in sizes like 10x14, and 16x 20. An assortment of pencils, and types of tape, brushes, Gesso, etc.  And way in the back of this mess were several sheets of 300 lb. cold pressed Kilamanjaro watercolor paper. Now that all this stuff has been removed, I am in a give-away mood. Good grief – and this is only closet number one! To all of my artist friends out there – check your art closet(s) once in a while – it is like opening an art treasure chest! I said before -I am not a hoarder! Funny thing is – the closet still looks full! CWS Artists Shine in FWS 49th Exhibition Just because COVID-19 has interrupted all sorts of events around the Nature Coast, including the Citrus Watercolor Society (CWS) scheduled September session, does not mean that CWS artists and their creative abilities have to dry up and disappear. The Florida Watercolor Society (FWS) has announced the entry winners of the FWS 49th Annual Exhibition. For a Florida artist to have one of their paintings selected for inclusion in the exhibition by Judge Michael Reardon, is an honor indeed! There were over 600 entries this year and only 100 have been chosen to be included in the exhibition. CWS artists chosen for the FWS Exhibition this year are Susan Strawbridge of Inverness, FL, Kim Shields of Inverness, FL, Nancy Dias of the Villages, FL, and Heather Doherty of Ocala, FL. To be picked in the exhibition is the first step in the process to become a Signature Member of the FWS. Three such entries by the individual artist are required to reach that status. CWS members Kim Shields and Susan Strawbridge, both have already achieved FWS Signature status. And, by making the cut this year, Nancy Dias has achieved her Signature Status. To Heather Doherty we say, “Keep on trying!” So - What are we missing out on with the cancellation of our September meeting of the Citrus Watercolor Society? The scheduled “Show and Tell” program was canceled. This program provides an opportunity for our fellow CWS artists to exhibit their artwork to the group as a whole and tell about the basis for their watercolor creation. The types of paints used, the colors that were selected, the choice of brushes and papers used, problems they may have encountered – and how they solved them. This is the reason that the CWS has continued this program in September of each year. The meeting format allows some outstanding watercolor paintings make their appearance. The works of our member artists are impressive, and they get better each year. It is also an opportunity for members to praise and to provide helpful critique. We will miss “Show and Tell!” TO GO TO FWS WEBSITE CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE FWS FACEBOOK PAGE CLICK HERE Welcome to the 2020 FWS Annual Convention. We can’t get together physically but that won’t stop resourceful artists from sharing ideas, techniques and work.  This year we will do all that virtually.  There are options and activities we can have this year that we do not have with a physical convention.  When the convention is over, you can watch everything again on a private YouTube channel.  So hit the register button and Begin Now. REGISTER NOW Florida Watercolor Society to Hold Virtual Annual Convention, Tradeshow and Workshops The Florida Watercolor Society (FWS), well-known for its unrivaled annual convention, tradeshow and associated workshops, will hold its entire event virtually this year. The convention, to be held September 21 – 27, is a celebration of watermedia, and will include: Demonstrations by juror Michael Reardon and workshop instructor Sandy Maudlin, as well as numerous FWS members Discussion on the business of being an artist with internationally recognized artist Dean Mitchell Panel discussion of national jurors on how to be successful in national exhibitions FWS will also be offering a full range of virtual workshops in conjunction with the convention. They include: Kim Minichiello, Color Theory Simplified Painting Boldly with a Gouache, it's pronounced like squash with a G . But, what the heck is it anyway? Gouache is a true watercolor painting medium. When it is applied to the paper it is opaque - not transparent. Since transparent watercolor has been preferred by many watercolor artists and groups for many years Gouache was not used. Many watercolor societies would/will not accept anything but transparent watercolor paintings. It was the gold standard to be able to produce rich wonderful paintings with transparent watercolor alone. Gouache and transparent watercolor can be mixed, however once the Gouache is introduced into the mix you lose the transparency. Gouache can be reconstituted just like transparent watercolor. When used along transparent watercolor Gouache can be especially useful for whiskers and that bit of light in an eye or on a wet surface. A painting done entirely with Gouache photographs well because the colors are opaque. The surface when dry is matte. If you want to try it out just get a tube of white Gouache and mix some transparent color in to tint it. Just don't contaminate your whole well of color with the Gouache. I've had to clean out a whole well of paint from my pallet and replace it with fresh transparent color! Also watch contaminating your transparent color with a brush that still has Gouache on it. I've not touched on the rich and interesting history of Gouache but, if you want to know more, there are lots of good reference books. We even have some in the CWS library. Or, perhaps, google it. Happy Painting ❤ Darla Goldberg Art Center of Citrus County to Honor the Memory of Suzanne Mahr with Scholarship FundA Message from President Wanda BoydI know a lot of our members remember Suzanne Mahr who recently passed.Gerri Schwenkler of the Art Center of Citrus County called me today to tell me that she has put all art work she can find by Suzanne in the gallery for sale at nominal prices to help the Art Center's scholarship fund.
