Please help us to respond to DoH consultation on charges for NHS services! Categories:January 11, 2018

The Department of Health are undertaking a review of the 2017 Amendment to the National Health Service (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations. This has far-reaching implications: it is now a legal requirement to withhold treatment from chargeable overseas visitors until the estimated full cost of the service has been paid (unless doing so would prevent or delay immediately necessary or urgent services); and, this now also applies to community services including: community midwifery services; community mental health services; drug and alcohol treatment services; district nursing services; and outreach services.
We believe that these charges are likely to lead to significant harm to individuals and to public health. We also believe that this policy has not been properly evaluated, or that individuals working in affected services have received proper training, prior to its implementation. Furthermore, it also introduces a charging scheme directly into the NHS.
Please help us by sending us any case reports or examples that we can use as evidence in our report. To make this easier, we have produced a proforma, which is attached below. We would be grateful if you could kindly complete this and email it to us at HPforGH@gmail.com.
Unfortunately, we have only been given until the end of the month to respond. We would therefore be grateful if you could get back to us by Wednesday 24th January, to give us a few days to put together a report. If this is not possible, or if you would like to discuss with us first, please email us (leave us your phone number if possible) and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Forced displacement: Health and human rights in a challenging environment Categories:September 26, 2017

In 2016, 25.6 million people, or one person in 113, had been forcibly displaced worldwide, both internally within national boundaries (40.8 million) and across borders (24.5 million). Not only are the numbers of those forcibly displaced increasing but these populations are also experiencing a rise in preventable diseases, deterioration in mental health and neglect of chronic diseases.
During this session a panel of experts will explore important health issues for these populations, including provision of healthcare to populations in different migration phases and the responsiveness of receiving health care systems. Broader political and legal barriers, such as protectionist policies and legal status and restrictions will also be discussed. This seminar will aim to challenge perceptions and raise awareness of some of the complex issues involved in providing healthcare for forcibly displaced people globally.

Seminar Crisis in the NHS: What is the way forward? Categories:April 6, 2017
This seminar asks, “Is the NHS in crisis?” How is the NHS coping with increased demand and pressures to deliver excellence, in a context of increasingly limited resources and ongoing structural change? Is our current model of healthcare sustainable in the current political climate? What are the alternatives?
This seminar will benefit from a panel of speakers involved in service delivery and planning from a range of backgrounds who will each put forward their perspective. The audience will then have the opportunity to put questions to the panel in a Question Time style debate. We aim to provide the audience with up-to-date information and an improved understanding of the challenges in provision of effective healthcare, to enable them to go on to become skilled advocates and effective leaders in the future.
Held in conjunction with the London School of Hygiene Tropical Medicine.

Doctors of the World Job Opportunity: Womens and Childrens Health Coordinator (part-time staff) Categories:August 11, 2016
Doctors of the World UK is part of the global Médecins du Monde network, which delivers over 400 projects in 80 countries through 3,000 volunteers.Our vision is of a world in which vulnerable people affected by war, natural disasters, disease, hunger, poverty or exclusion get the healthcare they need regardless of income or status.
Through our health programmes and advocacy, we work to ensure excluded people overcome barriers to healthcare.
Since opening in the UK in 1998, we have raised more than £15 million for overseas programmes, helped more than 8,600 service user here in the UK, and fought for healthcare as a human right for all.
We work with and for:
» people in crisis, providing life-saving humanitarian healthcare in times of war and after natural disasters
» vulnerable migrants, including by advocating for the right to healthcare across Europe
» people at risk of harm, especially from HIV and AIDS or hepatitis C, such as drug users and sex workers
women and girls’ right to sexual and reproductive health.
The Doctors of the World Family Clinic tackles health inequalities by helping some of the most marginalised with vulnerabilities in health to access healthcare and wider support services. It provides specialist care for pregnant women and families with children under 18. Providing health assessments to identify risks, stressors and protective factors that might impact on health. We offer hour long appointments alongside a drop-in twice a month and a follow up and case management service.
We see a range of people with often complex needs and offer a range of services:
• We provide a specialist service for pregnant women to promote access to antenatal care, offering obstetric checks, help with antenatal referrals, explaining what to expect and advising on rights and charging within the NHS.
• We see women and children who have been exposed to violence including trafficking and domestic violence and identify needs and ensure on-going support.
• We see families living in destitution and support access to services.
• We carry out child initial healthcare assessments for new arrivals identifying key needs and opportunities for health promotion and preventative interventions.
• We also work with partner organisations to promote health and wellbeing by addressing the wider social and environmental determinants of health.

Global Health Capabilities for UK Health Professionals Categories:August 11, 2016
In our increasingly interdependent world, global health is relevant to all health professionals.With increasing population movement and shifting disease patterns, health professionals working in the UK are
being challenged to deliver effective care to multicultural communities with diverse needs. Health professionals also require an understanding of, and the ability to respond to, the effects of globalisation on health and health systems.
This document primarily provides a framework of core global health capabilities to guide the curricula of postgraduate health professionals in the UK. These capabilities are mainly targeted towards doctors, but may be tailored to the training needs of other health professionals, of undergraduate students and of health professionals and students in other countries.
The five core capabilities, which are of equal value and priority, are interrelated. Each one is relevant to all UK postgraduate health professionals, impacting on both day-to-day practice, clinical leadership and advocacy roles.

Job Opportunity: Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) Clinical Programme Manager Categories:July 7, 2016
CSH is looking for a highly able and motivated individual with experience of providing front-line clinical care in the NHS to join its clinical programme team. This is a full-time post based in Oxford, salary £35,000 per year, to start September 2016.
The pioneering CSH clinical programme is positioning sustainability at the heart of good clinical care. The programme works with healthcare professionals and others that support them by developing conceptual frameworks for clinical sustainability and embedding these within training and practice. Key elements of our work include: the Sustainable Specialties programme, in particular the fellowships scholarships; and the Sustainable Healthcare Education (SHE) Network.
CSH is a registered charity which is at the forefront of bringing sustainability to the health sector. Partners include Royal Colleges, National clinical leads, the Sustainable Development Unit and NICE.

TIME TO GO GLOBAL: a consultation on global health competencies for postgraduate doctors Categories:July 1, 2016
Background: Globalisation is having profound impacts on health and healthcare.We solicited the views of a wide
range of stakeholders in order to develop core global health competencies for postgraduate doctors.
Methods: Published literature and existing curricula informed writing of seven global health competencies for
consultation. A modified policy Delphi involved an online survey and face-to-face and telephone interviews
over three rounds.
Results: Over 250 stakeholders participated, including doctors, other health professionals, policymakers and
members of the public from all continents of the world. Participants indicated that global health competence
is essential for postgraduate doctors and other health professionals. Concernswere expressed about overburdening
curricula and identifying what is ‘essential’ for whom. Conflicting perspectives emerged about the importance
and relevance of different global health topics. Five core competencies were developed: (1) diversity, human
rights and ethics; (2) environmental, social and economic determinants of health; (3) global epidemiology;
(4) global health governance; and (5) health systems and health professionals.
Conclusions: Global health can bring important perspectives to postgraduate curricula, enhancing the ability of
doctors to provide quality care. These global health competencies require tailoring to meet different trainees’
needs and facilitate their incorporation into curricula. Healthcare and global health are ever-changing; therefore,
the competencies will need to be regularly reviewed and updated.
