Description:

LOS ANGELES, CA - From their first LP Are You In or Out? (2009) to their latest LP Casual Acquaintances (2018), The Growlers have forged their own twisted path on the global music scene. They're the party band that grew into a traveling circus that spawned their own hit event, Beach Goth. Lead singer Brooks Nielsen draws a particular devotion among Growlers fans, as does chief cohort Matt Taylor, The Growlers' music director and lead guitarist. Their most recent LP was 2016's City Club, produced by Julian Casablancas, which saw them expand their palette to include West African, dance, and electronic influences.Self-produced by core members Brooks and Matt, Casual Acquaintances brings back the grit and DIY majesty of vintage Growlers. With its overdriven synths and tender, twisted lyrics, the lead single "Problems III" bridges the gap between "Beach Goth" in its purest form and the dance floor punch that made City Club so compelling. Consisting of demos, works-in-progress and other unfinished business from the band's City Club sessions - and featuring cover art by internet phenoms Aleia Murawski and Sam Copeland - Casual Acquaintances defies expectation, delivering a fully-formed vision that stands alongside the band's finest, fuzziest work. The album premiered during week two of  The Growlers Beach Goth Pop Up, July 26-29, at 1700 Naud St in Downtown LA in advance of the upcoming Beach Goth 2018 event held on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at Los Angeles State Historic Park. This year's lineup includes The Voidz (with Julian Casablancas, producer of The Growlers 2016 LP City Club), The Drums, Hatchie, Jonathan Richman, GWAR, Doug E. Fresh, Youth of Today, Yellowman, Bushwick Bill, Starcrawler, Kirin J Callinan and more. Next up, the band hits the road on their upcoming Beach Goth World Tour. As part of the release, the band has shared a video for the nostalgic first single "Straight Shot". Watch the video here. The album also includes the "high-octane" (Gary Graff, Billboard) track "Angels" as well as "Empty Vessels" which premiered earlier this week on Consequence of Sound, who described the song as "sturdy even as it tumbles through endless spirals of orchestration like a dream through the early breaking daylight."After scoring Films, TV, Musicals, Ballets, and performing with symphony orchestra's, Devotchka emerge from the studio with their sixth full-length album, which includes 11 songs that defy categorization. These tracks straddle the line between the epic and the intimate. Devotchka has garnered much praise and attention for blurring the lines of genre and cultural influence, and with this release they have clearly carved their own unique space in the modern musical landscape. Frontman Nick Urata's soaring vocal croon and poetic lyrics are back in full force. His voice travels atop ambitious film noir orchestras and live vintage vodoo rock combos. It all started following the end of DeVotchKa's 2012 tour, when Urata was left feeling conflicted. On one hand, the band was as popular as ever, playing their critically-acclaimed songs to fans at sold-out shows around the globe, and he was enjoying a burgeoning career as a film score composer, with a GRAMMY nomination already under his belt for the film Little Miss Sunshine. However, on the night of DeVotchKa's final show of the tour, onstage in an enormous arena in Mexico, Urata belted out the first few lines only to discover his microphone powered off-a simple mistake, but one that would later cause him to reflect deeply on his stake in life. try not to make a big deal out of it, but you don't recover from that for the rest of the show," Urata says, now smiling at the memory. "It happened more than once on that tour. I was realizing how nearly anyone can sing, almost everybody has the ability, but if you want to perform for people, then you have to fight for it."After the tour the band-Urata (vocals, guitars, Theremin, trumpet, piano), Jeanie Schroder (acoustic bass, sousaphone), Shawn King (drums, percussion, trumpet), and Tom Hagerman (violin, viola, accordion, piano)-enjoyed a series of gigs at smaller venues. Urata spent those shows both reconnecting with his audience on a more intimate level and rediscovering his love for his craft. It was a necessary moment that inspired him to begin work on a new DeVotchKa album-a process that would take a lot longer than anyone anticipated, but that would prove essential. "I realized the motivation is simply how much I love singing," Urata says, "and I just want to keep this conversation going with people who have connected with our band. It is a rare and powerful thing to connect with people like this, it is the thing that keeps us going."Utilizing that intimate dynamic, Urata turned his struggle into art. Through persistence, concerted effort, and patience, Urata found his path. "One thing I've learned from great writers is to force yourself to show up to work everyday, even if you feel you don't have anything-apply yourself and it will come," he says. "Writing music has always been the one thing in my life that's subconsciously gnawed at me. I have to do it."In writing for This Night Falls Forever, Urata tapped directly into his past, connecting the dots between that audience-and-artist relationship and a period of intense self-discovery. As for the album's title, Urata was inspired by yet another period of transition, albeit one that occurs each and every day: the passing of day into night. It's a fitting motif for his process, a constant reminder that toil eventually makes way for transport. "I wanted to capture that moment of twilight falling, where there's electricity in the air and you get that sense that everything is going to be OK."Last night, DeVotchKa took the stage at Rough Trade in New York for an album release show, following a stunning live session this week with Paste and a "stirring, epic, and intimate" performance with WNYC's Soundcheck. This weekend fans can tune in to see them on the eminent CBS Saturday Morning. Then, in the fall DeVotchKa takes the show on the road with their international tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. This Night Falls Forever is available on vinyl, CD and digital via http://found.ee/DeVotchKa_ThisNightFallsForever. A dreamlike lyric that seems to hold the cosmos in its hands. It’s still the most recognizable, covered and widely beloved song in the catalogue of a band that’s released a remarkable 26 albums. And it’s 30 years old this year. The song is 'Under The Milky Way', from the church’s most successful album, the undisputed classic Starfish. 2018, the Australian paisley underground pioneers are enjoying a year of unique celebrations, which started with a sold-out appearance at the Meltdown Festival in London on the personal invitation of curator, The Cure’s Robert Smith, on June 15th.Followed by a string of dates in the UK – including a sold-out fan convention in Shepherds Bush which saw the band perform their second album The Blurred Crusade in its entirety for the first time in that country – the church arrive in the US on September 30th for a month’s worth of shows, with a return early in 2019 planned to complete the US circuit. Joining the band onstage once again is ex-Remy Zero guitarist Jeffrey Cain who is also Kilbey’s partner in side project Isidore. For these shows, Starfish will likewise be performed in its entirety, along with a selection of other gems from the band’s career, which now spans an incredible 38 years. The band will return briefly to the UK in late October as very special guests of Fields of the Nephilim, a band whose music displays similar spectral soundscapes and whose leader, Carl McCoy, remains a big fan of the band. From there a flight home to a fast selling Starfish 30th Anniversary National Tour of homeland theaters in Australia awaits to conclude the year.Starfish remains best known for its iconic singles Under The Milky Way and Reptile. But like all classic albums, it’s a journey – and it starts with Destination, the six-minute epic that opens the album. In between it takes you to all point of the compass: North, South, East and West. The sound of Starfish is open and uncluttered. That was a change for the band after the dense orchestrations of the previous album, Heyday. All 10 songs are individually memorable, yet speak to one other, making for an entirely cohesive, satisfying listening experience. From there, the list of hits, band and fan favourites is long. Myrhh, which leader Steve Kilbey described in his memoir Something Quite Peculiar as the definitive Church song. Ripple, from the masterful Priest=Aura. Almost anything from 1982’s The Blurred Crusade.Expect songs from Hologram of Baal, itself celebrating its 20th anniversary. And, of course, there’s The Unguarded Moment, the single that launched the band onto world stages on its release on its release in 1981. this is not just a nostalgia trip. The Church have been revitalized since 2014 with the addition of guitarist Ian Haug, formerly of another iconic Australian band, Powderfinger. Haug’s first outing with the band was on the acclaimed Further/Deeper, which yielded a new dynamic set-closer,  the infinitely psychedelic and earth shaking Miami.Last year’s Man Woman Life Death Infinity strengthened the bond, cementing Haug’s place with long-time fans, as well as with the rest of the band: singer, bass player and songwriter Kilbey, fellow guitarist Peter Koppes and longtime drummer Tim Powles. “Ian is a big part of the band now,” Koppes says. “He’s a consummate, intuitive musician with fantastic tones.”Koppes goes on to sum up the band. “Music is like inner space and we’re astronauts,” he says. It’s a spellbinding thing, it’s hypnotizing. That’s why people like it. It takes them into another world and we’re here to open those doors.” Church’s strange journey remains an endless sea of possibilities. In 2018, it’s time for the band to celebrate one of their crowning glories, but always with an eye to the future. Further. Deeper. The new album is his finest solo offering yet and the gig was a celebration of this and his own back pages...a perfect example of how seamlessly it all fits together into a continuous career whole in a sweatshod celebration of a decades long quest of guitar pop brilliance.” - Louder Than War “...the songs themselves sounded urgent and engaged. The album was recorded and produced and recorded by band member Tom Gorman alongside longtime friend of the group Paul Q. Kolderie (Hole, Throwing Muses, Radiohead). Today, the band shared "Shiny One," the first single to be released from the forthcoming album.DOVE is now available for pre-order and includes an instant download of "Shiny One." "I have a lot of affection for 'Shiny One,'" says Tanya Donelly. "It was the first completely collaborative song we've ever done—Gail wrote the riff and the chorus, Tom and I wrote the verse and bridge, Chris’s parts shaped the direction and vibe. When I hear it, I hear all four of us equally."Belly, who formed in 1991, is Tanya Donelly (guitar, vocals), Tom Gorman (guitar), Chris Gorman (drums), and Gail Greenwood (bass). The band released their gold-certified critically-acclaimed debut album Star in 1993, which spawned the alternative radio and MTV staple "Feed The Tree" and led to Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist. In 1995, Belly released their sophomore album King and toured extensively behind the album before dissolving in 1996. Over the next two decades, the members stayed close while pursuing their own creative paths before the idea of a Belly reunion gained serious traction just a few years ago."We had just gotten to the point where we were just missing each other, and missing the music," says Donelly. "The music I've been doing in the past several years has been very collaborative, which made me kind of homesick for Belly; I missed that sense of having a band."The songs that comprise DOVE were spun out of a new songwriting system that was necessitated by the four members' far-flung hometowns. "It required a lot of trust," says Donelly, "because we were sending raw snippets to each other—anything from 30-second pieces to full songs. Tom and Gail and I would send demos back and forth, and then Chris would add drums to whatever snippets he'd heard, and Tom would sew everything together. It would sometimes be a very circuitous route to a song, but it was really fun."  "All three of the songwriters were locked in and working in a way that complemented the others' strengths," says Chris Gorman. "Gail's writing was in top form. Tanya is able to make anybody's song her own—she's got that gift. And Tom has really honed his arrangement and production style." Belly will launch their first major tour since 1995 later this year and will play Boston Calling on May 26. Find a full list of tour dates below. "We're all looking forward to presenting these songs in a live setting, and having the opportunity to play together again," says Chris Gorman. "We should be in for a really exciting year."Tracklist:ERASURE (Andy Bell and Vince Clarke) have unveiled the first track from World Beyond, the new album out on March 9 on Mute. World Beyond – which sees the entirety of Erasure’s 2017 album, World Be Gone, given a post-classical rework – is a collaboration with Echo Collective, the Brussels-based group of post-classical musicians best known for their ongoing collaborative work with A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Johann Johannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Stars of the Lid.Listen to “Still It’s Not Over,” which tackles the LGBT+ rights movement post-Stonewall and highlights the band’s place within that movement, here (youtube.com) World Beyond was recorded over ten days by Andy Bell and six performers from Echo Collective. Produced by Echo Collective, mixed by Gareth Jones and arranged by Echo Collective’s Gary De Cart, Margaret Hermant and Neil Leiter.  The tracks featured on World Beyond show award-winning songwriters Vince Clarke and Andy Bell in a more reflective mood, giving the world and recent political upheavals a thoughtful examination. This new collaboration gives a new dimension to the tracks and the band’s optimism about the future remains clear and bright. Andy Bell explains: “…the reinterpretations have brought such enormous context to the songs, it has created a new place for them.” The original idea for the album developed from Vince Clarke, who initially suggested that a single from World Be Gone could be given an orchestral reinterpretation, but as the idea expanded and took shape, he spoke at length to Echo Collective ahead of the recording. “It was great to talk through ideas with Echo Collective and then see how their arrangements took shape. The collaboration has given elements of the album a whole new feel and Andy's vocals remain as powerful and uplifting as ever” says Clarke. Recently, Erasure announced a North American leg in addition to the sold out European leg of their world tour.
