I was a student in the UK when there was a coup detat in Turkey in 1980, so I ended up staying here as a political refugee. By 1984, I was living in Haggerston West, in the buildings that LQ are redeveloping now. I was trying to adapt to my life around there and I ended up working for the Haggerston Tenants Association and the HaggerstonCommunity Centre. Until 2009, I was employed directly by the residents, but when the Canalside regeneration was complete, the community centre moved to Whitmore and I became part of Metropolitan.
Haggerston was something else, they were unique days. Leaving Haggerston was a sad day. When your director is the community, theyre telling you what they want, and you have to do what they want; I really liked that. Theres always a contradiction between the landlord and the residents, but Im trying to bridge that gap as much as I can. Because without the enthusiasm of the residents, things wouldnt move around here.

I went to Cuba in 1978 and was really impressed with thelevel of community participation compared to the UK. So, a few years ago Idecided to research a PhD on this topic.
Its hard to get resident involvement for the CRA; afterregeneration, hardly anyone was coming. Maybe thats a good thing, maybe itmeans people werent unhappy. But there are things we need to remind people now like all the Council rights we fought to maintain during the transfer to Canalside. We have stronger rights in our tenancy agreement that in other Metropolitanestates.

Ive lived here on and off for 20 years. I was a local councillor in the 80s and also a radio presenter. I may have one or two stories to tell from those days This area has become highly desirable and people are paying a lot now. If I could change something it would be the potholes. But not the people, although Id like to see even more community spirit. The way to engage people is to open your doors and chat to them.

I first moved to Hackney when I was 17. We lost that place and I was moving around, and then moved to Canalside in 2007. If I hadnt gotten into trouble, then I wouldnt have gotten help and come here. Hackney has been a great centre for music for years. Ive been doing music since I was 10. I used to work in a studio that Ray Hayden had in Hackney Central and now I produce my own stuff I just launched my new website at defury.biz.

Since regeneration its much quieter here. It feels likehome. I really like walking along the canalside, going to Dalston, and thelocal eateries. Down the road, theres a new Japanese place and a foodfestival. The only thing Id like is more events and activities organised forkids.

Michael - Myfavourite memory here is waking up in the morning and seeing the view of Londonfrom my bedroom. It makes me feel calm.
