Description:

College of Staten Island Professor Louis Petingi, PhD, is presentlyperforming research in Ribonucleic acid (RNA, which carries genetic information)predictionand structure, that can help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.Since 2013, he has been collaborating with a research group ledby Tamar Schlick, from Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Chemistrydepartments from New York University. Schlick’s research group is composed ofbiologists, chemists, mathematicians, and computer scientists, and the team hasbeen supported by several NIH and NSF grants. This group has currently taken aleadership role in fighting the pandemic by conducting research on RNAstructure, with support from an NSF grant (see attached PDF presentation).Dr. Petingi’s field of expertise is Graph Theory, one of the subfields of mathematics. “This area of research has been applied to study systems that can be modeled as graphs, such as social, communication, chemical, and biological networks (e.g., DNA, RNA, and protein networks). “My research was focused on the study of the reliability of communication networks (e.g., wireless, Internet, and satellite networks), but in 2013, I became very interested in RNA prediction and structure,” noted Dr. Petingi, “when I had the opportunity to write a paper in this area with Tamar Schlick.” Since then, he has published several research articles on this area of research with Dr. Schlick and her team.According to Dr. Petingi, “asRNA secondarystructurescan be represented as graphs, we found how well-knowngraph-theoretical algorithms can be applied to partition RNAs intobasicregionsand allow classification and identificationofcomplex structures called Pseudoknots. Many RNA viruses use Pseudoknots inthe control of viral RNA translation, replication, and the switch between thetwo processes. One of the techniques used to destroy viruses is to inhibit thePseudoknotted region of an RNA. The RNAs of the COVID-19 and SARS viruses arecomposed of thousands of basic elements called nucleotides, and the exactstructure of the Pseudoknots have not been yet experimentally observed, andthey have been predicted by algorithms. My current research goal is to develop, more precise algorithms using the graph-theoretical representation of RNAs topredict RNA structure.”Pseudoknotsare also identified using other computationaltechniques (e.g., dynamic programming, and formal language theory), but Graph Theoryoffersa differentperspectiveandan alternativeresearchpathto systematicallyinvestigate the structures of RNAs,” explained Dr. Petingi.“Collaboration with this group of researchers is not only givingme the unique opportunity to expend my scientific knowledge, but also to servea higher purpose by helping humanity,” Dr. Petingi concluded. The College of Staten Island encourages everyone to participate in #DaylightHour on Monday, June 22 between noon and 1:00pm. Lower your lights for one hour and conserve energy. More information is available online. We are pleased to announce that CUNY will be closed tomorrow, June 19, 2020,  in observance of Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The Board of Trustees approved a resolution to observe June 19 as a CUNY-wide 2020 holiday in support of the statements expressed in the Governor’s Executive Order No. 204, and in recognition that the observance of this holiday honors the history, perseverance and achievements of African Americans, and celebrates America s progress and continuing commitment to realizing the principles of liberty and equality upon which our nation is founded. In honor of Pride Month, the Staten Island community is invited to a virtual panel of LGBTQ+ youth on Wednesday, June 24 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. These young people will be talking about their experiences growing up, living, and going to school on Staten Island. It s important to listen to our youth to understand what they and their peers are experiencing. Please join us.You must register to attend this event. The first 50 people will receive an Amazon gift card. This event is a collaboration between the College of Staten Island, the Pride Center of Staten Island, and TYSA (Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness). Funding for this event is provided by the Staten Island Foundation. If you have any questions please contact jeremiah.jurkiewicz@csi.cuny.edu .A summary of recent news over the past few days from various sources is now online. This is taken from a running collection of newsbeing compiled by the College Council and Faculty Senate Executive Committees.Join public historian and CSI alum Debbie-Ann Paige on Friday, June 19 from 11:45am to 12:45pm for a virtual discussion of the history and significance of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and the culmination of the many celebrations created along the road to freedom. The discussion will be moderated by CSI s Vice-President for Student Affairs, Jennifer S. Borrero. Debbie-Ann Paige is a public historian specializing in local African American history, a co-president of the newly chartered Richard B. Dickenson Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) and professional genealogist. She has worked on numerous local history projects including: In Pursuit of Freedom with the Brooklyn Historical Society; From Farm to City with the Staten Island Museum; the designation of the Louis Napoleon House as a site to freedom with the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network on behalf of the Sandy Ground Historical Society, and the City Council street renaming of the corner of Fairview Avenue and Knox Place as “Samuel A. Browne Way” in the Castleton Hill section of Staten Island.Debbie-Ann has appeared as a historical interpreter on the Emmy-winning show “Secrets of New York,” and has worked closely with Frederick Douglass Memorial Park to transcribe their historical records. She facilitates public history forums throughout Staten Island focused on the historical perspectives of race relations, and lectures as an adjunct at the College of Staten Island.Additionally, Debbie-Ann is a policy analyst with the Council of State Governments Eastern Regional Conference working with state policymakers on issues relevant to veterans’ affairs, and staffs the organization’s initiative Council on Communities of Color (CCC).Debbie-Ann holds a BS in Business Studies from Southern New Hampshire University, and both a BA and MA in History from the College of Staten Island, CUNY. She and her husband more than 30 years resettled on Staten Island after Ernest retired from the USN in 2004. Their son Eric lives in Brazil and daughter English lives on Staten Island. In order to assist both incoming freshmen and current students, the Technology Training Team will be hosting virtual Student Technology Overview Sessions throughout the summer.  Please share this information with students and anyone that you feel would benefit from these sessions. Please join the Center for Career and Professional Development in the first Resumepalooza event on Thursday, July 9 from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm. It is virtual, so from the comfort of your home you can meet, via Zoom, with employers who have volunteered to provide 15 minutes to each student to individually review your resume and answer your career questions. Take advantage of this great opportunity to meet with employers to have your resume professionally reviewed. Although we are allowing other CUNY campuses to participate, this event was designed for CSI students. Don t miss out on this opportunity to talk with employers who want to meet you.
