February 2020 2nd and 7 Foundation Joins Read Across America Senior athletes led by football assistant coach Lance Vallee and rifle coach Jim Tiano took 7 senior athletes to Washington Park School today to read to all the second graders as part of the 2nd and 7 Foundation. This is the second time this year senior athletes took books to the second graders and read them and then autographed them for their young fans. What made today's event special were several things: it was Read Across America day, Dr. Seuss and Coach Vallee's birthdays, and all were engaged in learning through reading! Thanks to all for reading to our future athletes! Moore is an eighth grade American history teacher who takes the stories older generations learned from textbooks and reel-to-reel movies, and brings history to life for her students today. Wash High’s Student Council helped to raise money for a special heart program called Mended Little Hearts. The organization has been around for 10 years and assists families in southwestern PA with children dealing with heart issues. There is support, information, and social events to bring families facing childhood heart problems some help in handling their family’s tough times. Wash High Student Council members held a Penny War at the school and through pennies alone, raised about $120 for Mended Little Hearts. Senior President, Ethan Collins, took lead of this project and organized the competition and counting efforts among all of the senior high school homerooms. In case you’re counting (as they did), that’s 12,000 pennies! Ms. Frazier's homeroom came in first place, but we have to give a hand to Mr. Lewis' homeroom and Miss Roach's homeroom for battling it out all month long. With the help from the high school student body, we all contributed to the cause! Besides the Penny War at the school, student council also worked with other area student councils and held a forum recently where they worked together and came up with over $2000 for the charity. One of the fun activities included in the forum of student councils was a kickball game that Wash High student council members worked together to put a winning strategy in place. All students enjoyed the forum, but the Mended Little Hearts was the biggest beneficiary of the day! Congratulations to all for your involvement and commitment to helping! February 2020 Wash High Senior Writer in National Competition A special note of congratulations to Isabel Marshall, a senior in AP English, who won a Gold Key for her essay, Existentialism, in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest. Her essay will be eligible for national honors by a jury of readers in New York. Ms. Brandy LaQuatra, Isabel’s teacher, said that “Isabel also won more awards. At the local level, she won three honorable mentions for two of her poems, and one personal essay and a Silver Key for her entire portfolio. “She truly is a remarkable young woman- so gifted, inquisitive and a born leader. I could go on all day about her. I am thrilled that she has been recognized by the district and for her writing. I want so much for her to believe in herself as much as I do. She is truly special and talented.” ! Marshall is pleased and humbled by her awards and looks forward to graduating and going to college. She has several opportunities she is pursuing for her writing. The College of Wooster seems to be her main preference and she is ready to move forward with her dream. While in high school, Marshall has participated in Prexie Musical Theater and marching band, symphonic and jazz bands. An alto sax player, she enjoys music and the varied music she has learned to play. She has also been a participant with the Prexie Musical theater and currently with the Prexie Performers. She currently serves as the President of the National Honor Society at the high school. When she’s not performing in theater or band, or writing, she finds time to work part-time with the Common Ground Teen Center, training in peer counseling. Marshall, one of two daughters of Dana Shiller and Tom Marshall, of East Washington, said she has been enjoying exploring her options for her future. Utilizing her talents and abilities, that future should be bright for Isabel Marshall! The district wishes Isabel good luck in the national competition later this spring February 2020 Black History Month Encourages Essay Winners Six Washington High School juniors won cash awards in the Black History Month Essay Contest sponsored by Stop the Violence Pittsburgh and American Eagle Outfitters this February. February 2020 Washington Ski Club Receives Grant from Share Winter Foundation Students in the Washington School District Ski Club will enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Hidden Valley and Seven Springs at a lower cost, courtesy of a $2500 grant from the Share Winter Foundation for the 2019-20 school year. Ski Club sponsor and ESL teacher Michele Radachy wrote the grant to the foundation to assist with the ski trip costs. Radachy explained that the students’ interest to learn to ski and snowboard is there, but “the costs of transportation and equipment are prohibitive for many students in the district. To assist, the Share Winter Foundation grant will help reduce the costs for the 18 students from 6th to 12th grades who participate in Ski Club. We plan to take 4 day trips to the ski resorts this season.” The students’ and chaperones’ expressions show their appreciation for the opportunities to ski and snowboard at Hidden Valley.
